Overview of Position:

The Histology Technician is responsible to perform pre-analytical specimen processing on surgical tissue.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1.    Provide outstanding customer service to internal and external customers.
2.    Scope of responsibility may include maintenance of equipment, embeds tissue in proper size base mold, appropriately levels tissue in blocks, prepares tissue slides of uniform thickness without compressions, folds, or chatter marks, and cover slips slides without air bubbles.
3.    Must demonstrate ability to keep accurate records, to include specimen identification through all steps of processing and specimen registration via the hospital and laboratory information system.
4.    Maintains knowledge of histology special stains and immunohistochemical stains.
5.    May provide assistance in area of Cytoprocessing.
6.    Maintains knowledge and assists the organization in complying with all regulatory agencies including CAP, HFAP, OSHA, and HIPPA.
7.    Maintains the highest level of professionalism and confidentiality at all times.
8.    Performs other functions as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS
1.    Completion of an accredited HLT or HT program, HLT(ASCP) or equivalent, HT(ASCP) or equivalent, or registry eligible.
2.    Entry level experience in Histology laboratory which may include a hospital based student clinical rotation.
3.    Excellent interpersonal, decision-making, and investigative skills.
4.    Demonstrated excellence with listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
5.    Ability to provide outstanding customer service and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
6.    Ability to work with minimal supervision and under pressure in a complex and changing work environment

3.    Promotes Patient and Employee Safety

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1.    Works in an environment that requires special blood and body fluid safety requirements.
2.    Required to travel throughout the department and to other floors.  May be required to drive to other locations.
3.    Answers telephone calls, use personal computers and other business machines, all which require the ability to apply finger dexterity.
4.    Individual sits, stands, walks, bends, and reaches.
5.    Regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
6.    Vision abilities required include up close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
7.    May be required to periodically rotate shifts and regular days off.  All system employees must be willing to work all shifts, extra hours, holidays, and emergency shifts as required.
