Backend Architect (Node.js)

Work location: TOPCON Office located in Bologna ( Italy )

The job can be performed 100% remote ( Italy) with visit to our Bologna office Once a week

Job Purpose

We’re building intelligent platforms that automate and optimize construction and geospatial workflows — and we’re looking for a Backend Architect with deep expertise in Node.js, cloud-native architecture, and high-load distributed systems.

This is a hands-on, senior-level role where you’ll lead the design and scalability of complex backend services — with a strong focus on AWS cloud efficiency, performance, and resilience at scale.

🎯 What You’ll Do

• Architect and evolve backend infrastructure for mission-critical, high-traffic applications used globally
• Design scalable systems using Node.js and TypeScript, applying modern async patterns and event-driven design
• Lead architectural decisions related to cloud infrastructure (AWS) — optimizing for cost-efficiency, scalability, and resilience
• Define and enforce engineering best practices across backend teams
• Work with DevOps and SREs to ensure production systems are reliable, observable, and easily maintainable
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, frontend, and data teams to shape end-to-end solutions
• Drive architectural reviews, documentation, and mentoring across the engineering organization

✅ What We’re Looking For

• University degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics, or a related field.
• 10+ working experience in Software Development field.
• 6+ years of backend development experience, with at least 3+ years architecting large-scale systems in Node.js / TypeScript
• Proven track record building and scaling high-load, cloud-native systems in production
• Deep understanding of AWS services (e.g., ECS/EKS, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, RDS, CloudWatch) and cost-efficient architecture design
• Strong knowledge of microservices, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and message-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
• Experience with both NoSQL and relational databases and their performance tuning in large-scale environments
• Solid grasp of software architecture principles: domain-driven design, event sourcing, clean architecture
• Excellent communication skills and ability to drive technical discussions in English
• Comfortable working in distributed, cross-cultural teams

🌟 Nice to Have

• Hands-on experience optimizing cloud cost at scale using AWS Budgets, Graviton, or Spot Instances
• Exposure to Edge computing, real-time data streaming, or geo-distributed systems
• Familiarity with Terraform, Pulumi, or other IaC tools
• Background in geospatial, GIS, or construction tech is a plus
• Leadership experience in mentoring or scaling global engineering teams
