Job Description

Under the direction of an RN, the CIU Technician provides care and treatment appropriate to the age of patients served as detailed and determined through the unit specific Scope of Care, Competency/Skills Checklists, Equipment Skills Matrix and In-service Training.

Responsibilities and Duties

Performs patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Recognizes basic nursing needs of patients and demonstrates initiative in meeting those needs.

Appropriately performs advanced technician procedures as denoted on the skills checklist and demonstrates initiative in maintaining competency in those procedures; e.g., Foley insertion, phlebotomy, EKG, IV insertion, groin management.

Assists the Registered Nurse/Physician with tasks appropriately an according to policy/procedure.

Maintains ongoing communication with the patient care team regarding observations and patient needs.

Sets time priorities with the patient care team.

Performs other duties as requested within scope of care and demonstrated competency.

Shows initiative in performing routine environmental tasks: Linen, Instruments, Equipment cleaning and care, Unit cleanliness, Care and maintenance of oxygen tanks

Ensures that treatment rooms are adequately supplied and appropriately cleaned between patients.

Knowledgeable with regard to obtaining supplies.

Anticipates safety needs of patients such as call bell and side rails.

Demonstrates personal and professional safety techniques such as good body mechanics, universal precautions and appropriate measures with combative patients.

Completes required in-services on schedule.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Recent completion of one year of nursing school including clinical rotations is required.

Experience

Previous experience in a related job field involving direct patient care, e.g. hospital nursing assistant; pre-hospital emergency care at shock-trauma level or above; hospital technician such as phlebotomist or RT tech., is required.

Certification & Licensure

BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) - AHA approved required. New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.

Qualifications

Successful completion of orientation skills checklist.

Understands basic principles of human growth and development.

Competent to successfully interact with patients according to their special needs which may apply based on the age of the patient served (see Job Description Addendum - Age Specific Competencies).
