PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking our next Streets Superintendent. This isn't just about paving roads; you are the guru of municipal collaboration, making sure winter road maintenance hits the right notes and complex repair projects don’t end up in a tangle with other agencies.

We need a confident leader who can support, train, and direct our hardworking team while keeping that strong commitment to safety. If you excel at problem-solving and handling sensitive citizen requests with tact, let's talk about coordinating operations for the Public Works Department.

 

Hiring salary $82,665 - $103,331.annually

Fully salary range: $82,665 - $129,164/annually

Salary to be commensurate with experience.

The Streets Superintendent coordinates and directs the streets operations and maintenance of city streets and projects. for the Public Works Department. 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises the City's street maintenance program including general maintenance and repair activities as well as winter road maintenance functions.
  • Plans and schedules rehabilitation, and routine maintenance; prepares productivity, and other types of reports.
  • Responds to citizen requests for maintenance.
  • Coordinates work with other departments or agencies.
  • Interacts with citizens, outside agencies, and other departments concerning complaints, procedures, standards, and specifications.
  • Coordinate MHTs with outside agencies.
  • Conducts field reviews.
  • Develops and implements safety programs.
  • Represents the department at meetings.
  • Proposes operational policies.
  • Makes recommendations for capital improvement projects.
  • Assists in developing operational priorities, goals, and objectives.
  • Reports to the Manager regarding selecting, hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining of assigned employees.
  • Supervises assigned employees.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education: 

  • Associate degree in civil engineering, public administration or directly related field.

Experience: 

  • At least 4 years progressively responsible professional level experience in construction, maintenance, and repair of streets systems or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering technology or a directly related field.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the methods, principles, practices, materials, and operating procedures used in municipal street maintenance.
  • Hazards and safety practices common to equipment used.
  • Heavy construction and excavation techniques.
  • Application of materials per operation.
  • Soils Materials Knowledge.
  • Concrete Materials Knowledge.
  • Conventional Mix Asphalt Knowledge.
  • Familiarity with Streets equipment
  • Familiarity with Streets equipment.

Skills: 

  • Strong interpersonal, decision-making, and supervisory skills.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills.

Abilities: 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, vendors, and citizens
  • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy

Licenses and Certifications Required: 

  • Colorado Class B CDL
  • Must obtain ATSSA safety certificate within six (6) months of employment in the position        
  • Must obtain RTD On-Track Safety Training Certification within six (6) months of employment in the position
  • Traffic Control Technician Certification within six (6) months of employment in the position        
  • Must obtain city of Aurora Basic Supervisory certificate within six (6) months of employment in the position

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Light to moderate physical work requiring ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Regular walking and standing.
  • Some pushing, pulling, bending, crouching/stooping, and climbing to inspect drainage system and observe field work.
  • Hand/eye coordination to operate computer keyboard and equipment.
  • Hand/foot coordination for operation of vehicles and equipment.
  • Vision to read manuals, reports, and other written material.
  • Speech communication, hearing, and listening for communication with employees and citizens.

Work Environment:

  • Works both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions with some exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and fumes.

Equipment Used:

  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computers and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel, and menu driven databases.
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
