Job Description

The CST and SPD Educator is an experienced Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and certified in one of the following, Certified Service Technician (CRCST) CBSPD (Certified Sterile Processing Technician), CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician), or Certification for IAHCSMM CHL (Certification in Healthcare Leadership). He /she is responsible for coordination and implementation of education, process improvement, and staff development programs for the sterile processing technicians, core technicians, and operating room technicians. He/she serves as a liaison between Operating Room and the Sterile Processing Department. Superior communication and computer skills are required as is knowledge of surgical instrumentation and sterile processing standards of practice. Responsibilities include: Designs and implements a system to detect and develop staff training needs for the certified SPD technicians, core technicians, and surgical technologists; assures that facility staff receive training specified in State and/or regulatory requirements; works cooperatively with staff and managers to determine educational needs of the employees; assists in developing yearly goals and objectives for the education programs; maintains session outlines and attendance logs for in-service training sessions; establishes a system for staff to evaluate each in-service session and analyze the evaluation results on a regular basis; assists in developing policies and procedures; participates in quality and infection control initiatives for improvement activities to evaluate services to determine objectives and methods of instruction; develops education or protocols for new processes, supplies, instruments, and equipment requiring staff training and development, and provide training programs accordingly; oversees department quality control and improvement programs, including error detection, daily activity, and improvement planning and implementation; acts as a resource for staff concerning continuing education opportunities. This person will also help to coordinate with Surgical Technology school programs to facilitate practical experience for those technicians in training.

Education
Graduate of an accredited surgical technology course required.

Experience
Previous care coordination experience in outpatient setting required
Previous experience in case management preferred

Certification & Licensures
State board certification required prior to the start of employment

Qualifications
Basic management and organizational development and training techniques required Comprehensive knowledge of theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies required Comprehensive knowledge of the principles/application of sterilization of surgical instrumentation, equipment, surgical supplies, and case cart systems required Thorough understanding of principles of sterile processing, including decontamination, packing, sterilization, storage and controls, indicators, and documentation required Regulatory and professional standards in the area of the operating room and sterile processing required Principles and techniques of curriculum development required Ability to conduct training and develop sessions, perform the role of facilitator, and effectively utilize group dynamic skills and techniques required Demonstrated active listening skills, communicate ideas and information effectively both orally and in writing required Ability to speak and answer questions effectively before large and small groups required Ability to conduct training programs as developed by vendors or others, including written instructional tools, graphic displays, and other presentation aids required Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work required Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing required Strong computer skills required including a working knowledge of MS Word and MS Excel required Experience with an instrument tracking system preferred Self-starter and ability to work independently when required Ability to set priorities, be flexible, multi-task, and meet deadlines required Demonstrated understanding of LEAN methodology required
