Education

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, BSN required

Experience / Qualifications

  • RN- Current RN licensure in the state of Florida
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association for Healthcare Providers.
  • ACLS certification through the American Heart Association for Healthcare Providers.
  • NIHSS training can be obtained through various organizations and learning systems that offer courses from the American Heart Association.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of recent, high-acuity Cath Lab or critical care nursing experience required. Prior experience in a preceptor or educator role preferred.
  • CVRN-BC Certification preferred

Position Summary

The Cath Lab RN Coordinator provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing cardiac catheterization procedures while also developing, coordinating, and implementing educational programs for Cath Lab staff. This role requires expert clinical skills, strong critical thinking, and effective communication to ensure high standards of patient care and foster professional development within the department. The individual will serve as a clinical resource and mentor, actively participating in performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Cath Lab Registered Nurse (approx. 75% of role)

  • Patient Assessment and Monitoring: Perform comprehensive pre-, intra-, and post-procedure patient assessments, including physical examination, vital signs, ECG, and hemodynamic monitoring. Anticipate and recognize subtle changes in patient status and initiate appropriate interventions, especially during sedation.
  • Procedure Assistance: Assist cardiologists and the multidisciplinary team during diagnostic and interventional procedures (e.g., coronary stents, angioplasty, pacemaker insertions, structural heart procedures, etc). Perform as a circulating, scrub, and monitoring nurse in accordance with departmental standards and protocols.
  • Medication Administration: Administer prescribed oral and intravenous medications, including sedatives and potent cardiac medications, and document patient responses.
  • Equipment Management: Operate and troubleshoot specialized equipment such as intra-aortic balloon pumps, LVAD (Impella), physiological recorders, and imaging systems.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Ensure all patient documentation, including consent forms, charting, and lab results, is accurate and complete, adhering to all regulatory requirements.
  • Emergency Response: Be prepared for and respond to emergencies in a prompt, calm, and professional manner.
  • On-Call Coverage: Participate in the department's on-call rotation for emergency/after-hours procedures.

Nurse Coordinator (approx. 25% of role)

  • Staff Development: Plan, develop, coordinate, and implement educational activities for new hires, experienced nurses, and ancillary staff, including orientation and ongoing competency validation.
  • Mentorship and Coaching: Act as a facilitator and consultant for staff learning, serving as a role model for excellent clinical skills and professional behavior. Mentor and evaluate existing preceptors.
  • Program Development: Design and implement educational programs, in-services, and skills days based on identified learning needs and evidence-based practice. Support staff in preparing for specialty certifications.
  • Quality Improvement: Collaborate with management and the multidisciplinary team to assess learning needs, support performance goals, and lead or support performance improvement initiatives.
  • Patient and Family Education: Enhance patient education processes within the department, ensuring patients and families receive clear instructions regarding procedures, medications, lifestyle, and post-procedure care to promote optimal outcomes.

Hand and Wrist (Test both left and right sides)                                                                  

Grip a dynamometer for 10 seconds with a force > 10 lbs.                                          

   

Pinch together the thumb & forefinger for 10 seconds with a force > 2 lbs.                                           

Supported Elbows (Test both left and right sides

Rotate wrist from left to right while holding 10 lb. weight.                                           

Fully flex and extend elbow while holding a 10 lb. weight.                                           

Shoulders (Test both left and right sides)

Sustain shoulder flexion > 135 degrees while holding 10 lb. weight.

Squat and hold position for 30 seconds.                                                                                                                                           

Kneel on a single knee, demonstrated on either left or right knee.                                                                      

Push and Pull

Push a stationary loaded cart with a pushing force of 40 lbs.       

Pull a stationary loaded cart with a pulling force of 40 lbs.                                          

Carrying

Carry a 20 lb. weight for a distance of 25 feet.                                                                                                                                                                

Lifting

Threshold Requirements

  • Annual Joint Commission mandatory education requirements, in-service and health requirements including attendance at new employee orientation
