Duties & Responsibilities
POSITION OVERVIEW
The cook prepares nutritious meals/snacks, manages inventory/ordering, plans menus following health guidelines, and ensures kitchen cleanliness, often handling dietary needs (allergies/special diets), serving children, and maintaining safety/hygiene, requiring teamwork, reliability, and sometimes extra duties like assisting with care or cleaning dining.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Meal Preparation: Cook breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, weighing/mixing ingredients, baking, grilling, and serving food for infants to toddlers.
- Menu & Nutrition: Plan menus, adapt recipes for allergies (gluten-free, vegan), and ensure compliance with child nutrition standards (like USDA guidelines).
- Food Management: Purchase groceries, manage inventory, control food costs, and maintain a budget.
- Hygiene & Safety: Maintain a sanitary kitchen, clean equipment, follow food safety programs (like HACCP), and wear hairnets/hats.
- Child-Specific Needs: Accommodate medical/feeding needs, communicate with parents about dietary restrictions, and potentially assist with first aid/diaper changes.
- Center Support: Attend meetings, participate in drills, assist with program activities to maintain ratios, and perform other duties as directed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of child nutrition and food safety.
- Strong time management, organization, and problem-solving.
- Attention to detail for allergies and portion control.
- Good communication and teamwork.
- Physical ability (lifting up to 40 lbs, standing, bending).
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL FACTORS
- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection).
- The worker is subject to environmental conditions.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES
- High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required.
- At least three years of cooking experience
- Background and heath screenings (TB test) required
- New Mexico Driver License is required.
