Position Summary

This position is responsible for the instruction and examination of students within the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Heavy Equipment certificate programs. The Instructor/Test Administrator prepares and delivers classroom theory, lab simulations, and fieldwork training. A primary responsibility of this role is obtaining and maintaining certification through the New Mexico Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to serve as a certified CDL Examiner. This role requires regular travel to satellite campuses and various off-site locations to provide mobile training and testing services as determined by the college.

Duties & Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Instructional Delivery: Prepares and teaches CDL and Heavy Equipment classroom theory and fieldwork. Travels to satellite campuses and designated off-site training areas to deliver instruction and hands-on training to diverse student populations.
  • Examination & Certification: Conducts official CDL examinations and ensures all testing protocols meet state and federal mandates. Maintains New Mexico DMV certification to facilitate LCC’s status as a mobile and stationary testing center.
  • Curriculum & Assessment: Participates in program development; prepares and grades tests, ensuring workforce readiness across all instructional sites. Participates in the colleges assessment efforts at the end of each semester or as determined by the academic leadership
  • Safety & Compliance: Performs required safety checks on training equipment (pre-trip/post-trip) per DOT guidelines. Ensures students at all locations follow DOT regulations and safety policies.
  • Equipment Stewardship: Coordinates maintenance and repairs for CDL/Heavy Equipment and simulators, ensuring all equipment—including mobile units—is in safe working condition.
  • Student Support: Advises students on registration and job placement. Attends state examinations as scheduled and supports students in preparation for final licensure.
  • Collaborative Outreach: Assists the Director in maintaining partnerships with community businesses for student job placement and on-the-job training.
  • Record Keeping: Maintains accurate student records and DOT compliance documentation for all assigned cohorts as established by the college.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of adult learning theory, curriculum development, classroom, laboratory and field presentation techniques.
  • Ability to prepare and present classroom lectures and laboratory work.
  • Proficiency in Commercial Vehicle Driving and Heavy Equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations, federal motor carrier safety standards, and DMV testing protocols.
  • Ability to manage instructional environments independently at satellite or remote locations.
  • Skill in using training simulators and diagnostic tools.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage training schedules across multiple geographic sites

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL FACTORS

  • Physical Effort: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally. Position requires standing, climbing, and walking at least 70% of the time.
  • Travel Requirements: Significant travel is required. The worker must be able to commute to satellite campuses and off-site training locations frequently.
  • Visual Acuity: Requires close visual acuity for data analysis and detailed mechanical safety inspections.
  • Environmental Exposure: Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions at various training sites.
  • Requirements: Must be able to pass and maintain a DOT drug test and a DOT physical.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES

  • License: A valid New Mexico Class A CDL Driver’s License is required.
  • Experience: At least two (2) years of practical commercial driving experience is required.
  • Mobility: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have the ability to travel to various locations as determined by the college.
  • Certification: Must be eligible to obtain and maintain New Mexico DMV CDL Examiner Certification.
