Job Summary
The City of Olathe is seeking a dedicated Fleet Maintenance Technician to join our 2nd shift team, working Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with an additional $0.74 per hour shift differential.
In this important role, you will help maintain the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the City’s vehicles and equipment, supporting the delivery of essential municipal services.

This recruitment may be used to fill a Fleet Maintenance Technician I, II, III, or IV position. Starting level and pay will be based on verified experience and certifications.
Fleet Maintenance Technician I
Pay Range: $21.75 to $24.97 per hour, depending on qualifications, plus $0.74 per hour shift differential
Minimum Experience: Two years
Required Certification: A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
Fleet Maintenance Technician II
Pay Range: $23.75 to $26.95 per hour, depending on qualifications, plus $0.74 per hour shift differential
Minimum Experience: Three years of education and/or experience in automotive and equipment maintenance and repair required; hydraulic experience preferred
Required Certifications:
A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
Three total certifications, including:
Two ASE certifications in Brakes and Suspension
One additional certification of choice, or EVT F1 or F2
Fleet Maintenance Technician III
Pay Range: $25.50 to $29.72 per hour, depending on qualifications, plus $0.74 per hour shift differential
Minimum Experience: Six years of education and/or experience in automotive and equipment maintenance and repair required; hydraulic experience preferred
Required Certifications:
A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
Three ASE certifications total, including Brakes, Suspension, and one ASE certification of choice
For heavy-duty assignments: EVT F1 or F2, plus F3 and F4
For light-duty assignments: EVT F1 or F2, plus L1 and ASE Electrical
Fleet Maintenance Technician IV
Pay Range: $28.00 to $33.20 per hour, depending on qualifications, plus $0.74 per hour shift differential
Minimum Experience: Ten years of experience in automotive and equipment maintenance and repair required; hydraulic experience preferred
Required Certifications:
A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
All certifications required for ASE Master Mechanic
For light-duty assignments: EVT L1
For heavy-duty assignments: all required EVT training
ASE = National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence
EVT = Emergency Vehicle Technician
High school diploma or equivalent, with coursework in automotive technology; trade school education in automotive technology preferred
Valid State of Kansas driver’s license with a favorable driving record
Ability to obtain a Kansas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements within six months of hire

The Fleet Maintenance Technician uses their technical expertise to perform complex skilled maintenance, diagnostics and repairs to automotive, light, and medium duty trucks, and a wide variety of equipment such as but not limited to tractors and lawn mowers to ensure the vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently. This position is part of a four-level career progression of Fleet Maintenance Technician I, II, III and IV.
Key Responsibilities
Analyzes vehicle and equipment failures; determines causes, recommends and/or completes repair solutions including but not limited to engine, transmission, brake suspension, hydraulic and electric repairs using proper safety devices and procedures.
Performs routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid checks to prevent breakdowns and extend the lifespan of vehicles and equipment.
Performs equipment installation, fabrication, welding, and acetylene cutting for all types of vehicles and equipment.
Responds to emergency repairs and service calls on vehicles and equipment including afterhours calls.
Maintains accurate and detailed records; reports on repairs performed, equipment usage and condition.
Qualifications
Experience: A minimum of three years of training and/or experience in Automotive and Equipment Maintenance and repair is required. Hydraulic experience preferred.
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented with course work in automotive technology is required. Trade school is preferred.
Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver’s license with favorable driving record is required. A class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required within 6 months of employment.
Environmental or Physical Demands: May encounter moderate noise levels from vehicles, equipment, instruments, or ventilation systems.
