Job SummaryProvide security and safety for patients, staff, visitors and hospital assets through the developed Security and Safety Management Plans and all related Administrative and Departmental policies and procedures.
Essential Functions- Recognizes the importance of patient/staff safety precautions as it relates to their specific department/area of responsibility. Consistently utilizes precautions and follows appropriate procedures to enhance patient/staff safety in their daily operations. Identifies and reports any potentially dangerous situations to their manager which could cause medical error/patient or staff harm. Immediately takes action, where appropriate, to minimize the risk of injury. Where appropriate to staff member’s responsibilities, reports errors, when these occur, to their supervisor and on an occurrence report. Participates, when appropriate, in Root Cause Analyses and/or other efforts to reduce risk of medical error/patient or staff harm.
- Participates in performance/customer service improvement; actively assists in improving performance based on results obtained from customer satisfaction/PI activities. Recognizes systems approach to PI. Where appropriate, participates in Performance Improvement activities including team membership. Identifies processes that need improvement.
- Assess the patient’s clinical responses to respiratory care.
- Review and assesses the patient’s chart, incorporating findings in respiratory plan of care.
- Accurately reviews the patient’s overall cardio-pulmonary status, utilizing inspection, auscultation and interview.
- Provides respiratory care based on patient’s developmental stage:
- Infant, Pediatrics, Adolescents, Adults, Geriatrics
- Notifies/consults with physicians of findings or changes
- Assess patients receiving oxygen therapy to evaluate effectiveness of treatment.
- Prioritizes implementation of physician orders according to patient need, physician requests and interdepartmental procedures.
- Communicates appropriately with patients based on developmental stages:
- Infants, Pediatrics, Adolescents, Adults, Geriatrics
- Gives/receives report during change of shift
- Documents on appropriate forms
- Enters and retrieves computer information:
- Enter orders, Retrieves orders, Obtains patient reports
- Review and signs off physicians orders.
- Documents all procedures/patient education on patient’s chart during each visit.
- Notes any special precautions, adverse reactions or changes during each visit.
- Communicates to physician the patient’s response to therapy and whether objectives are being met
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills to perform procedures in a safe and effective manner.
- Accurately performs arterial punctures.
- Analyzes arterial blood gas samples correctly and demonstrates appropriate use of equipment.
- Initiates, monitors and manages a patient receiving mechanical ventilation on: bBird T-Bird, LTV, Servo-I, Avea.
- Utilizes appropriate oxygen equipment and administers oxygen therapy and other medical gases; maintains PAR levels for O2 cylinders house-wide.
- Performs electrocardiogram and related procedures according to EKG policy.
- Performs dilution calculations of aerosol medications and administers drugs by inhalation.
- Noninvasive ventilation (Bipap): Respironics, Vision & V60
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of medications utilized in respiratory treatments.
- Recognizes and responds to side effects and adverse reactions of medications appropriate to age groups.
- Accurately documents medication administration.
- Provides respiratory care in a critical or emergency situation.
- Maintain CPR certifications. (If applicable)
- Respond appropriately to “ stat” calls.
- Performs CPR appropriately when indicated
- Manages airway care appropriately when indicated.
- Utilizes manual resuscitators appropriately and can assemble and disassemble properly.
- Promotes and contributes to patient/family education.
- Assesses and documents patient/family’s teaching needs; including goal setting.
- Provides teaching to patient/family as identified.
- Documents education provided and patient’s response appropriate to age groups.

- Prepare hazardous materials packages in compliance with US Department of Transportation (DOT) and/or New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) regulations by packaging hazardous materials in compliant packaging, labeling and marking hazmat packages according to regulatory requirements, and drafting and certifying shipping documents required for domestic or international shipping. Assist with any related permits that must be obtained to be in environmental compliance. Assist teammates in cleanup of hazardous waste spills utilizing up to Level B personal protective equipment; collect and process samples. Manage all aspects of hazardous waste initial accumulation points. Provide daily support to the Hospital by receiving and or/collecting, processing and managing universal wastes, recyclable wastes/materials, hazardous materials and other non-regulated and non-hazardous wastes.
- Performs other related duties as assigned and requested.
Qualifications- Graduate of an AMA approved school for Respiratory Care and
- BS Bachelor’s degree preferred Preferred
- 1-3 years One-year experience required
- NICU experience preferred
- Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
- Respiratory Therapists - New York State Board of Respiratory Therapy Required
- BLS - American Heart Association Required
- ACLS/PALS preferred
