Job SummaryProvides direct restorative and/or maintenance treatment of patients, carries out administrative duties associated with patient care, and contributes to department operations appropriate to the specific site.
Essential Functions- Responsible for direct patient/client care as appropriate to site. Once competency has been established:
- Performs standardized and non-standardized evaluations of patients/clients using standard and adapted techniques.
- Develops appropriate short and long term goals
- Develops treatment plans based on evaluation results that lead to achievement of goals.
- Provides age appropriate treatment based on evaluation results that lead to achievement of goals.
- Evaluates and recommends patient/client need for durable medical equipment, completes appropriate justifications, is familiar with insurance requirements.
- Completes documentation according to facility time frames and requirements.
- Correctly identifies and bills for therapy services rendered.
- Attends monthly staff meetings.
- Is aware of safety precautions and able to carry out emergency procedures.
- Attends and participates in in-service programs.
- Fabricates adaptive equipment and splints.
- Provides patient/client/family education and training and participates in family conferences.
- Responsible for 100% direct patient care at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital site.
- Communicates with patients/clients clearly and adjusts approach based on their needs/abilities.
- Contributes to efficient hospital/facility, department and team functioning:
- Active participant in hospital/facility, department and team problem solving and projects.
- Volunteers assistance where needed.
- Supervises OTA’s, aides and volunteer as indicated.
- Provides in-service training for staff as requested by supervisor.
- Notifies the Director/Manager of need for equipment, materials or supplies, or follows department procedure.
- Performs assigned department responsibilities and maintenance.
- Maintains a neat work area.
- Maintains an awareness of department issues, projects a cooperative attitude, and promotes positive problem solving.
- Complies with department and facility mission, values and policies.
- Covers for Supervisor as indicated.
- Participates in student training program as needed.
- Actively participates in the supervision process:
- Communicates needs to supervisor.
- Modifies performance in response to supervisors’ feedback.
- Notifies supervisor of unusual patient findings in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates an awareness of limitations and seeks supervision appropriately.
- Demonstrates the ability to translate knowledge of physical, psycho-social and cognitive-perceptual changes related to age into assessments, treatment plans and treatment modalities for pediatric, adolescent, young adult, adult and geriatric patients/residents.
- Maintains annual requirements for the position:
- Completes assigned department orientation material.
- Attends clinical conferences as directed by supervisor.
- Participates in new staff orientation/competency assessment as necessary.

- Practices Standard Precautions. Follows regulations, policies and guidelines on the prevention of infections; does not eat or drink in patient care areas.
- Maintains confidentiality of information; abides by HIPAA regulations.
- Maintains a professional image and follows Hospital’s policy on uniforms; consistently wears hospital ID.
- Demonstrates reliable, on-time attendance, which is an essential function of all jobs at Burke.
- Completes mandatory annual learning (Learning Harbor) within deadline.
- Personally adheres to Burke C.A.R.E.S. philosophy by demonstrating compassion, accountability, respect and exceeding expectations through service excellence.
- Performs other duties as directed by Department Director/Manager, Occupational Therapy and/or the site specific supervisor.
Qualifications- BS Required or
- MAS Required or
- Doctor of Science Required
- 1-3 years 2+ years of clinical experience Required
- Works with patients, families and interdisciplinary team including OT staff, Physicians, and other disciplines
- Must be able to perform dependent assist transfers
- Able to monitor vital signs (HR, BP)
- Occupational Therapists - New York State Board of Occupational Therapy Required
- Initial Certification from NBCOT Required
