Job Summary

A radiology technologist performs all required exams ensuring high quality patient care and adequate radiation protection at all times. Performs all general, invasive, and imaging processes and procedures involved in CT and Special Procedures. The technologist is also required to rotate through all three areas and is required to be on call for those areas as needed. Also required to perform intravascular contrast media injections as defined in Section 89.40 in Part 89 Practice of Radiologic Technology.

Essential Functions

• Recognizes the importance of patient/staff safety precautions as it relates to their specific department/area of responsibility. Consistently utilizes precautions and follows appropriate procedures to enhance patient/staff safety in their daily operations. Identifies and reports any potentially dangerous situations to their manager which could cause medical error/patient or staff harm. Immediately takes action, where appropriate, to minimize the risk of injury. Where appropriate to staff member’s responsibilities, reports errors, when these occur, to their supervisor and on an occurrence report. Participates, when appropriate, in Root Cause Analyses and/or other efforts to reduce risk of medical error/patient or staff harm.
• Participates in performance/customer service improvement; actively assists in improving performance based on results obtained from customer satisfaction/PI activities. Recognizes systems approach to PI. Where appropriate, participates in Performance Improvement activities including team membership. Identifies processes that need improvement.
• Performs computerized tomographic exams of all body parts: head chest, abdomen and pelvis. This includes specific targeted procedures such as IAC’s, sinuses, adrenals, line, neck, etc.
• Performs all advanced computerized tomographic procedures such as 3D, MP Recon. and density. Performs CT guided biopsies with radiologist.
• Films examination evaluating completed study for technical quality. This includes magnification views, R.O.I., distance, measurements and special reconstruction.
• Maintains C.T. stats, maintenance and quality control records.
• Performs all Liebel Flarsheim automatic C.T. injection procedure.
• Performs all routine C.T. computer management procedures such as archiving and cleaning of computer disc.
• Schedules C.T. tests, providing the patient with proper instructions, when necessary.
• Operates hospital Meditech computer order entry, departmental and all other pertinent software.
• Answers patient’s questions regarding procedures, provides appropriate emotional support. Remains alert to patient’s physical condition, recognizes signs of patient distress and initiates prescribed emergency procedures.
• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to administer all forms of diagnostic imaging with special consideration to age of patient being treated. Displays the ability to manipulate the instrumentation technical factors based on all age groups to produce quality diagnostic images.
• Possesses the ability to obtain, assess and interpret information reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to age specific needs.
• Translates doctors’ orders involving technical, surgical procedures into appropriate imaging procedures. Prepares and positions patients correctly for specific examinations. Takes radiograms setting proper exposure, distance, and observing special requirements. Provides immobilization device as required. Assists physician in certain procedures.
• Applies an understanding of the consistently practiced safe techniques in operating imaging equipment, complying with all Federal and State Health an Radiation Standards, providing adequate protection for the patient, self, other staff members. Follows well-defined procedures in identifying patient, labeling films etc.
• Maintains supply level in assigned area, maintains room equipment, accessories in orderly manner. Practice sterile techniques as required and prevents cross contamination.
• Assists Radiologist in special procedure studies following sterile technique. This involves passing of guide wires, dilators, catheters, etc.
• Prepares examination media when necessary. Operates highly complex high pressure injector.
• Provides competent care with an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process.
• Administers oral contrast material such as; barium, Readi-Cat and gastrografin.
• Maintains a safe and orderly work area; adheres to hospital policies and procedures and standard safe work practices.
• Demonstrates commitment to total quality management and tenets of service excellence by acting in accordance with the organizational mission at all times.
• Operates portable x-ray equipment and takes films in patient units, operating room, etc. as necessary
• Prepares patient for lower bowel studies by mixing contrast material, fluoroscopic set up and placement of the tube in the proper anatomical location of the patient.
• Must be competent in anatomy, physiology of upper extremity.
• Must perform venipuncture in the upper extremity in a safe and effective manner.
• Must maintain and ensure proper use of venipuncture equipment, solutions and related equipment, techniques of intravenous line establishment. Administer saline flush and injection contrast media manually or by mechanical injection.
• Techs must be competent in handling hazards and complications of venipuncture, post puncture care, the composition and purpose of an anti-anaphylactic tray and the recognition of adverse reactions to intravenous administration of contrast media.
• Must establish an intravenous line.
• Complete annual online modules timely.
• Competency utilizing PACS.
• Effectively utilizes email.
• Knows how to perform daily QC if shift requires and Dicom.
• Assists in orientation and training of staff and students as needed.
• Utilized time effectively.
• Maintain HIPPA compliance.
• Performs other related duties as necessary or as assigned.

Qualifications

• AS Satisfactory completion AMA approved school for Diagnostic Radiologic Technology. Required
• 1-3 years One year experience as a Radiologic Technologist required, and must have completed on the job training in CT. Required
• Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
• Must possess a high degree of knowledge and understanding in services and technology.
• BLS - American Heart Association Required
• Licensed by New York State, and registered by the ARRT. Required
• Possess certification to administer contrast media from New York State. Required
