The Marine Research Facilities Manager works under the supervision of the School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering (SMSOE) Assistant Director, Marine Facilities and Operations to operate and maintain the SMSOE facilities and infrastructure, including the Judd Gregg Marine Research Complex, the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory, and the small boat fleet.  Applicants should have strong technical skills, familiarity with the marine environment and boats <100ft LOA, familiarity with the methods and materials involved in marine related research, and strong organizational and communication skills. Applicants should be prepared for physical work in all weather and challenging environments.

Duties/Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Assistant Director, Marine Facilities and Operations coordinate and perform day-to-day operations at the Judd Gregg Marine Research Complex (MRC) and the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory (JEL). (55%)

  • Work with the Assistant Director to coordinate and perform maintenance and operation of all facility infrastructure (basic tool, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry tasks)

  • Design, build, and maintain experimental systems based on the needs of researchers at the facilities

  • Operate facility vehicles (trucks, trailers, forklift, cranes/hoists, small boats) and equipment as required for the maintenance of the facility or the research needs of the users

  • Work with Assistant Director to act as liaison between UNH and NOAA regarding day-to-day operations and needs of the NOAA ship Ferdinand Hassler

  • Assist researchers with field sampling, experimental design, and technical assistance, including by snorkel or SCUBA operations as required

  • Work with the Assistant Director to plan, coordinate, and participate in outreach activities as required, working with docents, citizen scientists, and other volunteers, including preparing and presenting material to small groups, scheduling facility tours, and ensuring public safety at the facilities

  • Work with the Assistant Director to plan, coordinate, and teach facility-based courses necessary for the safe operation of the facilities (e.g. small boat operator course, crane safety course, forklift operator course)

  • Assist in the training of technical staff and at times help with the prioritization of technical staff work assignments.


Work with the Assistant director to coordinate operation and maintenance of the SMSOE small boat fleet. (25%)

  • Maintain SMSOE vessels to a high standard of safety and reliability

  • Work with Assistant Director to perform maintenance and minor repairs on all SMSOE vessels, including engine, electrical, and cosmetic repairs and installations

  • Act as vessel operator for research and outreach activities as required


Act as mate aboard larger research vessels (SMSOE and other affiliations). (20%)

  • Under limited supervision, perform all duties necessary of mates aboard the vessel, including vessel scheduling, mission planning, rigging/lifting/towing operations, vessel handling, watchstanding, dive operations support etc.

  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs aboard the vessel dockside and in the shipyard as necessary

  • Lead and instruct other crew, passengers, and researchers aboard the vessel as necessary, including safety briefings, emergency operations, and scientific operations

  • Conduct vessel operations in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to all USCG and UNH policies regarding operation of vessels and conducting scientific research.

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Master's degree in engineering, science or electronic/technical area and two years of related professional experience, including one year of supervisory experience, OR

  • Bachelor's degree and four years related experience, including one year of supervisory experience.


Required Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license

  • NH Safe Boating certificate (or valid certificate from a state/province/country with reciprocity)

  • DOT MEC and clean driving record

  • DAN-approved Oxygen and First Aid certification


Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with basic hand and power tools, as well as proper PPE

  • Understanding and practical knowledge of plumbing (potable, waste, and seawater) systems, pumps, electrical systems (including marine electrical), hydraulic systems. May involve construction, repairs, and maintenance of all the above

  • Familiarity with basic scientific principles and ability to apply those principles in the design, construction, and maintenance of experimental systems, particularly in the field of marine research

  • Familiarity with remote sensing instrumentation (operation and maintenance)

  • Experience with hoists/cranes, rigging and marlinspike seamanship

  • Snorkeling or diving experience

  • Proficiency with basic computing tasks

  • Ability to effectively teach small classes of various ages from middle school to adult on various practical topics related to the above

  • Leadership skills and the ability to motivate and instruct


Other Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in a random drug test program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • USCG MMC (OUPV or higher)

  • Basic SCUBA diver certification, Research/Advanced preferred.
