As a core member of the research team, the research scientist will work closely with Drs. Kimberly Mitchell and Lisa Jones to continue the Crimes Against Children Research Center (CCRC) mission to combat crimes against children by providing high quality research and statistics to the public, policy makers, law enforcement personnel, and other child welfare practitioners. The CCRC is located in the College of Liberal Arts. The CCRC was established in 1996 by Director David Finkelhor to provide high-quality research and statistics to the public, policy makers, law enforcement personnel and other child welfare practitioners. The position is full-time and begins January 1, 2026. This appointment will initially be for one year, but with plans to renew for up to four additional years based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The position is full-time and includes benefits following UNH guidelines. The applicant must be local to Seacoast, NH and able to work in our Durham, NH office 2 days a week.
Duties/Responsibilities
(15%)
- Preparing resources and materials for research activities: This category includes survey instrument development, programming surveys in Qualtrics, preparing and submitting IRB packages, and developing recruitment materials.
(20%)
- Collecting data and large database management: This category includes overseeing the data collection efforts for new projects, monitoring recruitment quotas, tracking participant retention over time, and overseeing incentive distribution.
(20%)
- Analyzing data: This category includes data cleaning, merging, coding and analyses of complex survey data.
(35%)
- Disseminating research findings: This category includes the development of peer reviewed manuscripts as primary author and contributing as co-author to manuscripts lead by other team members. This category also includes presentation at professional conferences and the development of infographics and fact sheets to help make research findings more accessible to non-research audiences.
(10%)
- Grant proposal writing: This category includes the development and submission of one federal grant proposal as primary researcher per year, as well as assisting in the development of other grant submissions led by team members as co-investigator.
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
- Ph.D. by the date of hire in Human Development and Family Science, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Medicine (pediatrics) or related discipline.
- One to three years of experience in one of the above related fields.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Serve as a seasoned level researcher and make independent contributions to projects based on professional training and experience.
- Independently and collaboratively work on program activities related to the CCRC
- Excellent written, interpersonal, organizational, and verbal communication skills
- Strong database management skills
- Flexible, adaptable
- Self-directed with excellent decision-making qualities
- Experience with and a broad understanding of quantitative methods.
- Ability to work independently on a daily basis, work well in a team, and synthesize and summarize research for a non-scientific audience
- Subject knowledge in violence against children and violence prevention.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written; including the ability to speak clearly to different audiences.
- Significant experience in the analysis of quantitative data and handling of missing data.
- Ability to work independently and accurately, and to problem solve technical and methodological issues that arise during the course of research.
- Understand and adhere to standard concepts, practices, and procedures related to criminal justice research and associated human subjects’ research ethics.
- Strong organization and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.
- Grant writing experience
- Ability to take ownership of tasks and take them from conception to completion, while communicating and coordinating with the larger research team.
- Excellent prioritization skills.
- Ability to complete tasks on time to meet articulated deadlines.
- Demonstrate high productivity in a fast-paced work environment.
- Strong attention to detail.
