Job Description:

The Division of Youth and Family and the Salt Lake City’s Mayor’s Office are pleased to offer summer intern positions.

Applicants must be 16 to 18-year-old teens living in Salt Lake City and attending Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD) high schools.

The Division of Youth and Family has developed a strong working relationship with the Salt Lake City School District Career and Technical Education (CTE) department. CTE Career and College Pathways show students a direct connection between doing well in high school and being able to transition smoothly to postsecondary opportunities or getting a good job when they graduate. Students who focus on a Career Pathway acquire the skills necessary for entry into well-paid careers with high potential for rapid financial growth, increased levels of responsibility, and a high degree of personal satisfaction.

About the Internship:

Intern participants will bring a new perspective into the workplace and help develop our future workforce. Salt Lake City staff will mentor the interns and help them explore future career opportunities. Interns will be assigned to a participating City department based on availability and interest.

The Youth and Family Summer Internship will run from June 3, 2026 – July 17, 2026, and June 3, 2026 – July 30, 2026, depending on internship placement. Participants should be available during this full 6-to-8-week time period to qualify.  

Interns can work up to 25 hours per week, and no more than 128 hours per month. These positions are at-will, part-time, non-benefit eligible positions.

Pay Rate: $15.11/hr.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in pre-service training sessions, including team building, workplace readiness, and professional development workshops.

  • Demonstrate professionalism by adhering to workplace expectations, communication standards, and timekeeping procedures.

  • Engage actively in internship orientation and ongoing learning opportunities, including mentorship and department-specific training.

  • Collaborate with team members, supervisors, and mentors to complete assigned projects and daily tasks.

  • Apply effective communication and networking skills in a professional work environment.

  • Demonstrate problem-solving abilities and adaptability in a workplace setting.

  • Participate in weekly training topics such as financial literacy, career exploration, and resume development.

  • Work toward personal and professional goals established at the beginning of the internship.

  • Attend training sessions throughout the 6–8 week program.

  • Complete assignments and projects aligned with departmental goals and internship objectives.

  • Develop and refine a professional resume and practice interview skills through mock interviews.

  • Engage in mentorship opportunities, including meeting with assigned mentors and learning about career pathways.

  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and team-oriented work environment.

  • Participate in program evaluations, debrief sessions, and the final celebration event.

  • Demonstrate growth in workplace readiness skills, including accountability, punctuality, and initiative.

  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Teens must be 16 to 18 years old at the start of the program.

  • Teens must be residents of Salt Lake City and currently be attending a Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD) high school.    

  • Preference will be given to youth who have participated in the YouthCity Program.

Working Conditions:

  • Moderate physical activity.  Required to stand, walk, for extended periods.  Exposure to lifting and attending employment training sessions.

  • Work may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Offers of employment may be contingent on successful completion of a criminal background check in accordance with City policy and applicable law.  Criminal offenses will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and do not automatically disqualify a candidate from City employment.
