The Marine Lab Technician & Deckhand supports daily operations aboard a sea-going teaching and research vessel. This role assists with organizing and maintaining the shipboard laboratory, setting up equipment, and helping troubleshoot basic computer and data-collection systems. Under the supervision of senior staff, the technician helps update lab manuals and documentation, prepares gear for coursework and field activities, and supports students during at-sea exercises by teaching basic safety practices and equipment use. The position also assists the Captain and crew with routine vessel operations, including line handling, lookout duties, standing watch, and general deck work. Additional responsibilities include helping with routine mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic maintenance tasks, managing tools and supplies, and supporting small-boat operations when needed.
Duties/Responsibilities
(30%) Organizing and maintaining the shipboard laboratory, setting up equipment, and helping to troubleshoot the basic computer and data-collection systems.
(30%) Assists senior staff to update lab manuals and documentation, prepares gear for coursework and filed activities, and support students during at-sea exercises by teaching basic safety practices and equipment use.
(25%) Assists the Captain and crew with routine vessel operations, including line handling, lookout duties, standing watch, and general deck work.
(15%) Assist with routine mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic maintenance tasks, managing tools and supplies, and supporting small-boat operations when needed.
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
Should hold a degree in an acoustics-related field and possess strong basic computer skills, the ability to work safely in challenging weather conditions, and the ability to pass required screenings.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior time at sea, experience on boats, mechanical aptitude, familiarity with marine sensors or sonar systems, and certifications such as First Aid/CPR or SCUBA.

Compensation Pay Range:
$30.00/hour
