The Residence Hall Director (RHD) for Orientation supports the Office for New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) in delivering New Student Orientation and Parent & Family Orientation programs for incoming students and their families. This position works part-time during the spring semester and transitions to full-time from late May through early July. The RHD collaborates with professional and student staff to plan, implement, and assess Orientation programming that aligns with departmental learning outcomes.

The position contributes to hiring, training, logistics, program delivery, and participant support, and includes serving as the overnight on-call professional during June Orientation sessions. Two tracks exist within this role: a Parent & Family focus and a Logistics focus.

Specific Role Track Assignments

(One of the following is assigned based on applicant preference and program need.)

Parent & Family Track

  • Serve as primary liaison for Parent & Family Orientation.

  • Prepare and break down Parent & Family sessions and reception spaces.

  • Introduce and moderate departmental and student panels.

  • Engage with families during key events such as “Become the Roar.”

Logistics Track

  • Oversee logistics for Orientation sessions including space setup, materials, and supplies.

  • Manage inventory and coordinate additional supply needs.

  • Supervise student check-in and check-out processes.

  • Act as primary contact for student activities at Hamel Recreation Center.

  • Organize and compile student attendance materials for each session.

Duties/Responsibilities

Orientation Planning & Coordination (40%)

  • Assist with the design, coordination, and execution of New Student Orientation and Parent & Family Orientation programs.

  • Participate in weekly meetings with NSFP leadership and staff.

  • Contribute to special projects such as survey data collection and analysis, workshop planning, program development, and social media content creation.

  • Support refinement of program logistics to ensure smooth day-of operations.

 

Student Staff Hiring, Training & Supervision (30%)

  • Participate in the selection and hiring of Orientation Leaders.

  • Lead and facilitate training sessions for Orientation Leaders during the summer.

  • Provide ongoing guidance and support to student staff throughout Orientation programming.

Participant & Family Support (15%)

  • Respond to student and family questions via phone, email, and in-person interactions.

  • Update and maintain student and family registrations.

  • Engage with participants during Orientation sessions and events.

On-Call and Operational Support (15%)

  • Serve as the overnight on-call professional during June Orientation sessions.

  • Troubleshoot operational issues and collaborate with administrative staff to address needs.

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience working with college students in a programmatic, advising, residence life, or student leaders

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to plan and facilitate engaging programming for students and families.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and efficiently.

  • Knowledge of student development principles and common transition challenges for new students.

  • Ability to advise, train, and support student staff.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with professional and student staff.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours as needed.

  • Availability to serve in an overnight on-call rotation during Orientation sessions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing or implementing Orientation or transition programming.

  • Experience supporting parent and family engagement initiatives.

  • Prior supervision or training of student leaders.

  • Experience working in a higher education or student affairs setting.

Compensation Pay Range:

$22.00 / Hour
