RiverView Health, is a community owned, membership based non-profit organization that was formed in 1898 and continues to be the sole community hospital in Crookston, MN.

 

RiverView Health operates a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital, RiverView Recovery Center; a chemical dependency outpatient treatment program, RiverView Home Care and five primary care and specialty clinics in the hospitals service area.

Responsibilities

Location: Hospital CoderPosition Status: Non-Exempt – Full-Time (.8 fte); subject to over-time

Location: Hybrid eligible, based on experience and training/orientation

Schedule: Monday – Friday

Pay Range: $19.93 - $33.60 /per hour (DOE - based on experience/certification status) - benefitted

 

The full-time (.8fte) – The Hospital Coder is responsible for accurately assigning codes to diagnoses and procedures performed during a patient's hospital stay, utilizing classification systems such as ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT.  As a Hospital Coder, you play a vital role in ensuring that every medical service a patient receives during their hospital stay is accurately documented and translated into universal healthcare codes. This role plays a critical part in the healthcare revenue cycle, ensuring proper reimbursement, accurate data for research and public health reporting, and compliance with all coding regulations and guidelines.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Abstracts pertinent information from patient records. Assigns ICD-9/10 CM or HCPCS codes, for billing (both hospital and clinics) as appropriate.
  • Queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes.
  • Remains current with coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Brings identified concerns to Lead Coder or Director of HIM for resolution.
  • Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association and American Medical Association and adheres to official coding guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ability to acquire any one of the certifications listed below within 1 year of employment:
    • RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator, or
    • RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician, or
    • CPC - Certified Professional Coder
    • CCA - Certified Coding Associate
    • CCS - Certified Coding Specialist
    • CCS-P - Certified Coding Specialist - Professional

 

Preferred(s):

  • Current certification in any of these areas: RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CCA, CCS, or CCS-P
  • 2+ years previous of coding experience i.e. hospital in/outpatient
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in health information management, Health Sciences, or related field
