Job purpose 

 

The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a key role in delivering patient-centered care within a managed care primary care practice. This position supports providers with direct patient care, ensures accurate clinical documentation, and contributes to quality initiatives such as HEDIS oversight. The MA performs clinical tasks including blood draws, injections, wound care, and patient education, while also assisting with care coordination and population health management. 

 

Duties and responsibilities 

  • Prepare patients for exams, record vital signs, medical histories, and current medications. 

  • Perform blood draws, collect and process lab specimens, and complete point-of-care testing. 

  • Administer injections, immunizations, and medications as directed. 

  • Provide wound care, dressing changes, and basic clinical procedures under provider supervision. 

  • Assist providers during patient exams, procedures, and treatments. 

  • Document patient encounters accurately in the electronic health record (EHR). 

  • Support HEDIS and quality initiatives, including tracking and closing care gaps, preventive screenings, and chronic disease management. 

  • Educate patients on medication use, treatment plans, preventive care, and lifestyle modifications. 

  • Maintain exam rooms, equipment, and supplies in compliance with infection control and safety standards. 

  • Comply with HIPAA, OSHA, and all clinic policies and procedures. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned, supporting organizational goals and initiatives. 

 

Qualifications 

  • Bilingual required Spanish/English.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred. 

  • Current certification/registration (CMA, RMA, or equivalent) strongly preferred. 

  • CPR certification preferred 

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a primary care, managed care, or outpatient clinic setting preferred. 

  • Proficiency with electronic health records and clinical documentation. 

  • Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking skills. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-based environment. 

  • Ability to pass a background check 

  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States  

 

Working conditions 

 

  • Requires frequent standing, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Direct patient contact with occasional exposure to bloodborne pathogens. 

 

Physical requirements  

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may regularly be required to:  

 

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during the workday. 

  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting of supplies and equipment. 

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move objects up to 25 pounds; occasional assistance may be required for heavier loads. 

  • Manual dexterity and hand–eye coordination required for clinical procedures such as injections, blood draws, and wound care. 

  • Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to assess patient needs, perform clinical tasks, and accurately document in the electronic health record. 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment with exposure to patients who may be ill, injured, or experiencing stress. 

  • Occasional exposure to bloodborne pathogens, communicable diseases, and hazardous materials, with appropriate personal protective equipment provided.
