About the Ray Marshall Center

The Ray Marshall Center (RMC) for the Study of Human Resources was established by Ray Marshall to support the research of pressing social and economic problems facing American workers.

The estate of Bryna and Henry David established an endowment for the Bryna and Henry David Fellowship through the RMC. Henry David taught at the LBJ School in the 1970s; both he and his wife Bryna were nationally recognized researchers in career-related education.

Every two years, the Ray Marshall Center hires an incoming Master’s student from the LBJ School of Public Affairs to work half-time (20 hours) on education and workforce related research projects with the option to work over the summer (fulfilling the LBJ School Master’s program internship requirement).

Purpose

The Ray Marshall Center is now accepting applications from incoming (1st year) Master’s students interested in education and workforce policy at LBJ for the biennial Bryna and Henry David Fellowship.

Work over the next year will include the following project related research and evaluation support:

  • City of Austin Workforce Evaluation Project (50%)

  • Community College Employment Outcomes Support Project (50%)

*Interested students are invited to submit a resume, letter of interest, and a writing sample with their applications by 5pm Monday, October 13. Interviews will be conducted by Zoom and scheduled the week of October 13 and a candidate will be selected by October 17. Depending on the number of applicants, the final round of candidates may be required to put together a 5-10 minute presentation.

Responsibilities

Data Management and Analysis

  • Assist with cleaning, validating, and managing college-supplied student data files
  • Run initial descriptive statistics and exploratory analyses under staff guidance
  • Generate tables, figures, and dashboards for community college partners

Training & Development

  • Undergo training in Lightcast labor market data
  • Develop Lightcast training modules for RMC staff, community college staff, and helping ensure the accuracy and reproducibility of results.

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., Stata, R, Python, or SAS).
  • Strong skills in data cleaning, management, and analysis.
  • Experience producing descriptive statistics, regression models, or related quantitative analyses.
  • Prior coursework or experience in quantitative research methods, program evaluation, or applied policy research.
  • Ability to present quantitative findings clearly in tables, charts, and written summaries for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated accuracy in data handling and documentation to ensure reproducibility.

*Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Lightcast.
  • Experience with survey or administrative data linkage.
  • Interest in workforce policy, education policy, and/or labor markets.

Pay Rate

$1,857.50 per month for 20 hours per week.

*David Fellows are paid a stipend, plus in-state tuition in the form of a Tuition Reduction Benefit, and also receive funds to support attendance at a national policy research conference each year. The position is 20 hours of work each week except for University holidays for staff.
