The Graduate Assistant will support the Office of Career & Life Design. Selection made by committee and hiring supervisor based on review of on-line applications and results of personal interviews.  Hiring decision contingent upon applicant clearing security background check. Work schedule will be determined by discussion with supervisor. This position will end May 15, 2026, and strong preference will be given to applicants who are able to commit long-term. The person that accepts this position will need to be available during the working office hours of the Office of Career & Life Design, and be available to lead and support OCLD events on-site.

Purpose

The Professional Development Graduate Consultant works closely with the Assistant Director for Professional Development and the Office of Career & Life Design team to build and strengthen content, resources, and programming for graduate students’ and postdoctoral scholars’ professional development. This position involves (1) building and maintaining a Canvas course about research communication skill-building for the advanced degree community; (2) leading and supporting OCLD events, including Empower Your Pitch Contest, professional skills development workshop series, and more; and (3) taking on other independent and supportive tasks, as assigned. The ideal candidate is someone who has experience designing and developing educational content (such as asynchronous online learning modules); demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills; is comfortable working independently (e.g., with minimum supervision and instructions); follows through on assigned responsibilities; and is eager to serve as an OCLD team member and an enthusiastic ambassador of OCLD programs and initiatives, promoting them to peers, departments, and the broader campus community. 

Responsibilities

  • Design asynchronous content, curriculum, and online resources on improving communication skills for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars (e.g., research storytelling, elevator pitches, visual/written communication, social media).

  • Develop and support interactive, in-person sessions (e.g., communication skills working groups or practice sessions) that foster skill-building through practice and peer feedback.

  • Support and lead needs research regarding professional development initiatives for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars across campus. 

  • Support the planning, coordination, and execution of workshops and events led by the Office of Career & Life Design.

  • Co-teach and propose new programs if desired. 

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with instructional content creation.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and research skills, including the ability to locate and synthesize high-quality resources.

  • Able to work independently and meet deadlines.

  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills; able to collaborate with a range of stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Experience with Canvas.

  • Attention to detail in editing, reviewing, and organizing materials.

  • Interest in learning more about career development, professional development, and life design.

  • Master's or PhD students enrolled in at least 9 credit hours Fall and Spring semesters.

  • In good academic standing with advisor approval.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. This includes students on F-1 or J-1 visas, who are eligible for on-campus employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing asynchronous learning contents and modules.

  • Experience with teaching and/or training in a university setting.

  • Familiarity with career education resources, both internal and external to the university.

  • Skills in event planning, coordination, and logistics.

Salary Range

$20 per hour-10 hours per week
