JOB SUMMARY
The Payroll Specialist assists with the coordination of payroll processing operations for the team. The position ensures accurate and timely processing of the weekly payroll and deduction and union payments. May serve as a backup to bi-weekly and monthly payrolls, and the company’s required Multi-Employer Trust Fund (METF).
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Accurately and compliantly processes and settles payroll, including the timely remittance of payroll taxes, and other deductions; maintains accurate teammate payroll records.
Accurately and compliantly calculates and remits monthly METFs contributions; prepares and distributes related reports; responds to third-party fund audit requests and coordinates any necessary remediation.
Accurately and compliantly processes garnishments.
Responds to payroll inquiries from store managers and teammates in a timely manner.
Responds to contribution inquiries from Labor Relations, unions, funds and teammates in a timely manner.
Manages union membership including enrollments, dues deductions and remittances, and reporting.
Serves as a backup for accurate and compliant processing and settlement of biweekly payroll, including the timely remittance of payroll taxes, and other deductions; maintains accurate teammate payroll records.
Records journal entries and performs account reconciliations, resolving discrepancies as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Required Education: Associate’s Degree/Junior College
Other Requirements: Associates Degree or equivalent experience/certification preferred. Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Professional Payroll (CPP) designation preferred.
Minimum Years of Experience: 2-3 years of payroll experience, preferably in Workday, or in a union environment.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Demonstrated knowledge of payroll calculations, tax regulations, and compliance requirements in a multi-state environment.
Ability to analyze payroll data to identify errors or potential issues.
High level of accuracy and meticulousness when handling sensitive payroll information.
Ability to identify and resolve payroll discrepancies effectively.
Working knowledge of both; knowledge of Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, V-lookups, etc.)
Exceptional organizational skills and the strong ability to work on multiple projects at a time
Strong numerical skills for accurate calculations of pay, taxes, deductions, and contributions.
Capable of ensuring timely remittance of payroll taxes and deductions, even during peak periods.
Ability to build and maintain powerful partnerships internally and externally
Commitment to serving teammates and external customers through timely and clear communication
