POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Chief Sustainability Officer, the Vice President of IM Safety and Sustainability is a key leadership position for the Office of Sustainability (OOS), the Technical Operations and Risk organization and the IM sector.

The Vice President of IM Safety and Sustainability will lead the development and execution of the IM Safety and Sustainability strategy and stakeholder engagement across IM operations and value chain.

The role leads an organization of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and Sustainability professionals in implementing goals and objectives for the Office of Sustainability and the IM sector and provides critical input and consultation on enterprise safety and sustainability programs, policies, procedures, and best practices in risk management, compliance and in support of business leadership and growth. The role also leads a team of environmental product compliance experts responsible for performing appropriate environmental assessments and documentation required for products to be placed on the market.

The role collaborates with internal and external stakeholders and subject matter experts to ensure the IM safety and sustainability performance, communication and engagement efforts are aligned with the Office of Sustainability, IM Sector and J&J enterprise priorities and stakeholder expectations

RESPONSIBILITIES

Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S)

Directs end to end operations and processes for safety programs across IM facilities focused on highlighting the importance of safety and embedding a culture of safety across the organization.

Establishes appropriate internal controls and measurement systems to ensure environmental and safety compliance and risk mitigation targets are met, areas of substandard performance are addressed, and continuous improvement is pursued.

Establishes processes and forums for ensuring stakeholder alignment and engagement and appropriate oversight and visibility to performance both for the sector and the enterprise

Sustainability Strategy & Governance

This role is also responsible for tailoring the enterprise environmental sustainability strategy for the IM sector and will lead a team who will work with colleagues in the IM business and OOS to develop the IM strategy, goals and governance structure to deliver progress against the strategy and goals

This role will also provide critical input into the development and maintenance of our enterprise environmental stewardship strategy (climate, waste, water, products/packaging, nature/biodiversity) including gaining alignment and buy-in from relevant functional and IM sector teams including commercial, supply chain, R&D, and procurement and finance.

This role will also participate in the enterprise Environmental Stewardship Community.

Product Compliance IM

Leads a team of technical experts in ensuring environmental product compliance and sustainability across IM in an increasingly legislated environment.

Areas of focus include Reach, EPR, chemicals and materials compliance, circular economy, environmental risk assessment, and hazards communication.

Business Sector Engagement

Drive business engagement and governance of end-to-end safety and environmental strategy for our IM sector including co-leading the IM sustainability council - support the business in integrating safety and sustainability metrics in leadership priorities and establish governance mechanisms to drive progress towards our goals.

Develops relationships with Senior IM leaders and key decision makers and ensures alignment with business priorities and integration of safety and sustainability into the business strategies and key decision making processes across the value chain.

Integrates safety and sustainability resource needs into IM financial plans and performance management processes.

External Engagement

This role will represent the company in external forums and IM industry groups on the topics of safety and sustainability execution in the IM sector.

People Leadership

Directs multiple teams led by Senior Directors, Directors, and/or occasionally other VPs and senior individual contributors. Is accountable for shaping and implementing the organization’s Talent agenda in alignment with OOS and TO&R Talent priorities and for having meaningful career development conversations and regular coaching and feedback with direct reports and top talent across the organization.

Builds, leads, and professionally develops the internal EH&S and Sustainability teams and has oversight on how contingent workers are engaged and effectively deployed to support the changing needs of the business.

This role will be a key member of the OOS LT and key IM functional LTs.

QUALIFICATIONS

The breadth of responsibility requires a person who can create an inclusive work environment and communicate effectively at all levels, sectors, and geographies and manage a high performing team in an extremely agile and dynamic safety and sustainability landscape

Required Minimum Education: University/Bachelor’s Degree preferably in the areas of Sustainability, Environmental Health and Safety or Business.

Other: An advanced degree MS or MBA preferred.

Required Years of Related Experience:

  • 15+ years of relevant business experience in implementing safety and/or sustainability programs and at least 5+ years working in a global, corporate setting – preferably in the healthcare/pharmaceuticals/medical devices industries
  • 10+ years leading diverse and global teams

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience as an End-to-end business thinker and leader
  • Ability to guide and lead change without authority across a matrixed organization.
  • Proven track record of building trust, partnerships, and influence across diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders from technical experts to C-suite leaders.
  • Extensive experience successfully leading building high performance teams (technical experts and generalists) and leading highly visible enterprise strategies from design through execution while consistently exceeding expectations.
  • Learning agility and natural curiosity
  • Financial acumen, managing and influencing budgets and business case development experience

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :

194,000 - 356,500
