Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone Orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals. 

Should you accept this position, it is anticipated that, following conclusion of the transaction, you would be an employee of DePuy Synthes and your employment would be governed by DePuy Synthes employment processes, programs, policies, and benefit plans. In that case, details of any planned changes would be provided to you by DePuy Synthes at an appropriate time and subject to any necessary consultation processes.

Summary: The Sr. Manager, Strategic R&D PMO Operations, Orthopedics plays a critical strategic and operational role in ensuring the effective execution of our research & development strategy.  This leader will be responsible for managing the operating mechanisms that enable effective cross-functional execution of the overall Orthopedics R&D project portfolio to deliver annual multi-platform commitments to specific revenue, profitability, and innovation milestone goals identified in partnership with leadership.  This leader will own the key performance indicator (KPI) reporting, risk escalation, and integrated cross-functional resource planning for R&D projects.  They will also work directly with the Director, R&D Process Improvement, Project Management Office platform leaders, Finance, R&D, Data Analytics, Supply Chain, and Global Strategic Marketing teams to help design, plan, and execute approved strategic PMO process improvement projects and/or standardization initiatives planned in partnership with Senior Leadership.  This leader will also support data fidelity for the R&D Orthopedics department project portfolio dashboard, enabling the delivery of valuable, real-time insights to leadership into how R&D is progressing towards their annual launches, milestones, and revenue objectives.  This is a high visibility role with significant input to our overall business strategy and effectiveness!  

You will be responsible for:

  • Orthopedics R&D Portfolio Execution & Reporting: Work closely with the Ortho PMO Leadership Team and all cross-functional partners supporting product development to ensure alignment, accountability, data fidelity, and strategic harmonization for effective execution of critical R&D programs.  The primary objective for this leader is driving operating mechanisms that will enable critical New Product Development (NPD) projects to successful completion on-time, on-budget, and on-model.  Other objectives include management of the Orthopedics KPI boundary agreements, project resource business planning processes, management of shared service priorities, and partnering with other NPD departments (i.e. supply chain, quality, regulatory) to proactively identify challenges and mitigate them.  You will be responsible for effective governance of the NPD portfolio process and any Ortho-level communication processes such as Dashboards or Platform Risk escalation reviews. 

  • Project Management Process Improvements & Coordination: Streamline how we launch products by influencing the way we conduct PMO processes, including resource management, project KPI management, and project status tracking processes.  This requires collaboration with Director, R&D E2E Process Improvement to identify pain points and recommend solutions with estimated costs and benefits.  You may also have additional responsibilities related to design, execution, and/or oversight of PMO operational strategic change initiatives that will improve end to end R&D execution, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with organizational goals.  This includes being a champion for new enterprise tools or other platform process improvements, as well as helping to evolve the organizational culture to be aligned with long-term vision for corporate mindset, mission, and ways of working.  
  • You will be a subject-matter-expert for evaluation of cross-platform opportunities for continuous improvement of our PMO excellence, to enhance productivity and efficiency.  This could include identifying areas of opportunity and recommending corrective actions to be implemented into project plans and/or time to market initiatives or acting as a liaison between various stakeholders to coordinate efforts and learn lessons.  

  • Resource Planning & Allocation: Support the processes of business planning and strategic portfolio evaluation.  You will help coordinate with Platform PMO, R&D, Data Analytics teams,  Global Strategic Marketing Directors and all cross-functional partners to ensure that business planning is coordinated and executed smoothly, and that all platform project data and financial metrics are consistent, accurate, and cross-functionally aligned, ensuring data fidelity for the R&D data analytics that will be used to drive effective decision making.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with internal external stakeholders, collaborating with other functions to support R&D goals.  This Sr. Manager will be a key communicator between the R&D PMOs and senior leadership, ensuring critical information is disseminated effectively and all team members are aligned with the R&D vision.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree  in a technical field (i.e. engineering, life sciences, etc.) required. MBA preferred
  • 8+ years of experience within Project Management Organization (PMO) required. R&D preferred
  • Regulated industry experience is required. Medical device or pharmaceutical industry experience is preferred
  • Strong business acumen within strategic planning and execution
  • Proven success in partnering and influencing across a matrix environment
  • Proven effective change leadership skills and excellent proactive communication
  • Demonstrated comfort with ambiguity and a fast-paced corporate environment.  Ability to adapt quickly to changes
  • The ability to actively influence culture to achieve results
  • 10% Domestic and International travel required

$137,000.00 - $235,750.00
