Job Description

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Administration & Strategic Planning

  • Provides leadership, direction, and long-range planning for Health & Wellness (Fitness Center) operations in alignment with institutional goals.

  • Establishes short- and long-term objectives, operational priorities, and performance measures for fitness and intramural programs.

  • Evaluates programs, services, and facilities to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and continuous improvement.

  • Prepares reports, analyses, and recommendations for University leadership.

 

Fitness, Exercise, & Intramural Programming

  • Oversees the development, scheduling, and assessment of group exercise classes, personal training services, and fitness programs.

  • Directs intramural and recreational sports programs, including league structure, scheduling, officiating, and participant engagement.

  • Ensures programming accommodates varying fitness levels and promotes broad student participation.

  • Coordinates special events, tournaments, and campus-wide recreational initiatives.

 

Facility Operations & Equipment Management

  • Oversees daily operations of the fitness center, including space utilization, hours of operation, and program logistics.

  • Manages the selection, acquisition, maintenance, and replacement of fitness equipment.

  • Ensures facilities and equipment meet safety standards and operational best practices.

 

Fiscal Management

  • Develops and administers the departmental budget in accordance with University fiscal policies.

  • Monitors expenditures, revenue, and participation data to ensure responsible resource allocation.

  • Identifies opportunities for partnerships, and cost-effective enhancements.

 

Risk Management & Compliance

  • Ensures compliance with University policies, TAMU System regulations, and applicable safety and risk management standards.

  • Develops, implements, and enforces policies and procedures related to fitness and intramural operations.

  • Oversees emergency procedures, staff training, and incident reporting to reduce risk and liability.

Personnel Management

  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates professional staff, fitness instructors, intramural coordinators, and student employees.

  • Establishes work schedules, assigns duties, and ensures appropriate staffing levels.

  • Promotes staff development, accountability, and high standards of customer service.

 

Campus Collaboration & Outreach

  • Serves as a liaison with campus partners including Student Affairs, Academic departments, Athletics, Residence Life, and student organizations.

  • Promotes Health & Wellness (Fitness Center) programs through outreach, marketing, and campus engagement efforts.

  • Represents the department on committees, at meetings, and at professional conferences as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management, Health Promotion, Higher Education Administration, or a related field.

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in fitness, recreation, or intramural sports administration.

  • Demonstrated experience managing facilities, programs, budgets, and staff.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management, Health Promotion, Higher Education Administration, or a related field.

  • Experience in a higher education setting.

  • Supervisory experience overseeing professional and student staff.

  • Professional certifications related to fitness, recreation, or facility operations

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of fitness center operations, group exercise programming, and intramural sports administration.

  • Knowledge of risk management, safety standards, and operational policies related to recreational facilities.

  • Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage budgets, analyze participation data, and prepare reports.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with campus constituencies.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Salary range for this position: $60,000-$70,000
