Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse

Position Accountable To: Director of Nursing

Job Summary

The LPN is responsible for assisting the registered nurse in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care.  The LPN is accountable for all patients assigned to him/her according to established policies and procedures of CMH and the scope of practice for the licensed practical nurse.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assessments for routine post-operative patient care.
  • Assessments and care of patients
  • Reports and documents observations accurately.
  • Administration of medications via IM, oral, subq., topical, rectal, vaginal, inhalation, eye, ear and IV-per LPN scope of practice.
  • Accompanies patient to nursing unit and gives verbal report to nurse.
  • Participates in collaboration with patients, family, physicians, other nursing staff and all ancillary departments.
  • Utilizes computer skills for entering physician’s orders, ordering supplies, and sending requisitions.
  • Knowledgeable of basic troubleshooting techniques of vital sign monitors.
  • Able to interpret and carry out physician's written and verbal orders.
  • Must be able to perform basic licensed practical nursing functions.
  • Will need to prepare and reheat food items to serve to in patients
  • Assist patients with ambulation, toileting needs and other activities of daily living.
  • Assist patient with personal needs as warranted
  • Review discharge information with patients
  • Maintains accurate nursing documentation
  • Maintains confidentiality
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

Marginal Job Functions:

  • Reports any malfunctioning equipment to the proper department so it can be evaluated, repaired and returned.
  • Familiar with location of supplies in order to assist in ordering and putting away.
  • Assists between patients with cleaning and putting linen on gurneys.
  • Clean patient rooms during and after patients stay.
  • Light housekeeping duties on the weekends and as needed
  • Remove linen and empty garbage

Requires much walking, pushing patient carts, beds, wheelchairs, and recliners, lifting of supplies on and off of shelves.

Work Environment: 

Shift work with additional call requirements.  Works with other, works around others verbal contact with others, face to face contact, , blood and body fluids, electrical devices, mechanical devices such as patient care equipment, computer equipment, moving objects such as carts, slippery surfaces, radiation, hazardous waste.  

Schedule: 

Up to 12 hour shifts include week-ends and holidays.

Work may be performed under pressure requiring close attention to detail.  Environmental stimuli overload.  Staffing and census fluctuations.  Potential exposure to difficult physician/patient situations, long work hours due to daily schedule

Education:

Post high school completion of accredited licensed practical nurse program

Licenses:

Current license in the state of South Dakota with expanded role LPN.  Previous nursing experience is desirable, but not required.

  • Responsible for utilizing the nursing process to provide nursing care for a specific group of patients

Certification Requirements for Position:

þ   BLS (Basic Life Support)

þ   ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

o   PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support

o   NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

o   TNCC (Trauma Nurse Core Course)

o   TCAR (Trauma Care After Resuscitation (x1)

o   CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention

Experience:

Previous hospital experience, critical care experience preferred. Must possess good communication skills
