Civil ServiceJob Summary:
Operates and maintains two (2) or more types of heavy motorized equipment as a primary work assignment to excavate and grade earth and to transport materials, supplies and equipment used in the construction, repair and maintenance of highways, buildings, parks and adjacent areas; and performs other related duties as required.Examples of Duties:

Cuts, levels, grades, and reshapes land;
Trims earth along roads and highways;
Uses a scarifier to rip earth and pavement;
Makes finished grades on road surfaces;
Digs and excavates trenches, ditches and streams and spreads earth for backfilling of same;
Scoops, loads, and unloads dirt, sand and gravel, rock, and other materials;
Lifts and sets pipes, timber and boulders into ditches and other locations;
Operates heavy diesel-powered D-6, D-7, or D-8, TD-25c hydraulic or cable controlled bulldozers to level and clear land of rocks, brush, trees, and other obstructions;
Operates a large truck-tractor and tows a low bed trailer;
Loads, hauls, and unloads heavy construction equipment such as bulldozers, graders, scrappers and etc. At construction sites;
Operates a 12-cubic yard dump truck hauling rock and earth from cuts and dumps load at fill areas and at construction sites;
Operates and adjusts a paving machine to spread and tamp asphalt for road construction and resurfacing projects;
Sub-grades, sub-bases, shoulders and paved bases, surfaces and finished courses;
Keeps equipment supplied with fuel, oil, water, and air;
Maintains, lubricates, and makes minor repairs to equipment; and
May occasionally operate other types of motorized equipment representative of this class and/or lower classes as required; and
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and
three and one half (3 ½) years of work experience in the operation of equipment applicable to positions in this class or certification by a county trainer of the ability to satisfactorily operate equipment applicable to positions in this class.
Applicants will be required to demonstrate such competency by satisfactorily passing a performance examination.
Applicants must be certified by the county trainer on the following equipment or have three and one half (3 ½) years of work experience in the operation of:
Truck-Tractor-Trailer and Hooklift Truck.
License Requirement:
Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License A and a current State of Hawaii DOT examination certificate.
Tests:
Applicants will be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.
The examination will consist of a qualifying performance evaluation.
