Position Summary
Waste Connections is currently looking for a Operations & Site Support Intern to join the team in Knoxville. This is a hybrid position that combines hands-on operational labor with exposure to hauling, logistics, and supervisory operations. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy physical, outdoor work while also wanting to build experience in operations, leadership, and logistics within the waste industry.
You will support daily site operations, assist with heavy equipment and labor tasks, and work alongside supervisors to gain insight into route planning, driver coordination, and service efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Field & Transfer Station Operations
Perform general labor duties around the transfer station
Assist with site cleanup, material handling, and daily operations
Lift, move, and handle materials weighing up to 50 lbs repeatedly
Work outdoors in all weather conditions year-round
Follow all safety policies and procedures
Other duties as assigned
Operations & Hauling Support
Shadow experienced supervisors and operations leaders
Support communication between drivers, dispatch, and customer service
Help resolve service issues and customer concerns
Assist with operational reporting and performance metrics
Contribute ideas to improve efficiency, safety, and driver satisfaction
Participate in rotational assignments across departments when available
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Experience
At least 1 year of work experience preferred, ideally in a labor, industrial, or outdoor environment
OR currently pursuing a degree in Business, Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field
Stable work history and strong work ethic
Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly throughout the workday
Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions
Mechanical aptitude a plus
Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced, field-based environment
Valid driver’s license required
