Candidates who are already ACT 120 certified will be hired directly into a Sworn Public Safety Officer role.
Pre-Act Academy candidate:
For candidates who are not yet ACT 120 certified, Bucknell Public Safety offers a pathway to becoming a Public Safety Officer:
Non-certified candidates will be hired initially into a Pre-Act Academy candidate role.
Following a successful review, the university will sponsor the Pre-Act Academy hire to attend an ACT 120 Police Academy.
Upon successful completion of the academy and obtaining ACT 120 certification, the individual will transition into a Sworn Public Safety Officer role.
The role reports to the Deputy Director of Public Safety & Lieutenant
On campus student facing role.
The schedule will vary across three different shifts.
Able to work weekends, evenings and some holidays.
Public Safety Officer, salary range: $24.25 to $28.38/hour.
Pre-Act Academy candidate: $18.00/hour.
In addition to the competitive salary we will be providing additional shift differentials for both second and third shift in the amount of $1.25/hour.
Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service on campus. Patrols campus, conducts vehicle stops, and issues traffic, parking and criminal citations.
Builds relationships and positively interacts with the University community through events and direct engagement.
Conducts criminal investigations and follow up interviews.
Conducts department training and community safety training, drills and alarm testing.
Writes detailed reports relating to criminal and non-criminal offenses and prepares cases for legal proceedings as required.

Performs routine patrols of campus grounds, facilities, building, and public areas. Monitors for suspicious activities, safety hazards, security incidents or other risks.
Serves community members, students, and visitors. Provides directions, escorting services, and general safety information.
Responds to emergency and nonemergency incidents. Addresses noise complaints, minor accidents, lockouts, vehicle jump starts, parking complaints, alarms, mental health complaints and property damage or theft. Ensures proper documentation is reported acutely and timely.
Assists during large events. Provides security and crowd control. Directs traffic and pedestrians as needed. Works with event organizers and other staff to ensure pepper safety protocols are in place.
Maintains current knowledge of all public safety protocols, procedures, and best practices. Completes regular required training.

Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
Possess and maintain ACT 120 standards in accordance with PA law.
Possess or be able to obtain a valid Pennsylvania vehicle license within 45 days of hire date.
Must be able to pass a background check for JNET clearance.
Out of State Candidates must be able to obtain PA ACT 120 Certification. We may sponsor candidates to an ACT 120 Training Academy. An employee contract between the candidate and Bucknell is a requirement of sponsorship. Out of state applicants must be able to pass the MPOETC waiver exam and be eligible to take the test based on attending the Police Academy.

One or more years work experience in a related field

Must be able to pass a background check for JNET clearance.
Possess or be able to obtain a valid Pennsylvania vehicle license within 45 days of hire date.

Prior experience working in campus law enforcement.
Must be able to pass a background check, physical, psychological, and if required for entry into the Police Academy a physical fitness test. This position, like all public safety positions, is subject to random drug testing.
Any non Act 120 certified candidate would be hired as a Pre-Act Academy candidate and would start at the salary range mentioned above. Upon completion of a MPOETC Academy a candidate would then move into a higher Sworn Public Safety Officer hourly rate.
All Public Safety personnel are also Campus Security Authorities as defined by the Clery Act.
A Pre-Act Academy candidate who needs to attend an academy will need to sign a 3 year employment contract.
All Public Safety Officer candidates must be able to obtain and maintain ACT 120 status (Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officer Education and Training Commission certification).
The Pre-Act Academy candidate needs to be able to lift, move, push, pull, or carry materials weighing from 20 to 50 lbs. Regular walking, biking, and driving is required. Must be able to run, bend, lift, and climb as required. Must be able to quickly respond to critical incidents.
The Public Safety Officer needs to be able to lift, move, push, pull, or carry materials weighing from 20 to 50 lbs. Regular walking, biking, and driving is required. 24.25-28.38The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.
