Job Summary:

Responsible, in consultation with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, for implementing a vision, strategy, and organizational structure to maximize the effectiveness of the Technology Transfer Office in serving the needs of researchers, staff, and external clients. Serves as liaison between UMMC inventors and outside patent counsel and licensees and leads UMMC's intellectual property and commercialization efforts and expands the institution's intellectual property portfolio.

Education & Experience

Master's degree in life sciences or business related field and five (5) years of experience to include direct responsibilities for intellectual property protection, commercial assessment of early stage technologies, licensing of early stage technologies, and managing employees.  PhD preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:  NA

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Thorough knowledge of intellectual property law and government regulations relating to patent prosecution, technology licensing, and management of conflict of interest; Proven track record of successfully marketing and licensing early stage technologies; Ability to communicate with a wide variety of constituents, including faculty, scientists, clinicians, industry executives, investors, economic development professionals and attorneys; Ability to draft and negotiate legal language typical for agreements transferring intellectual property


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership to advance the institution's goals of cultivating, protecting, and transferring UMMC technologies to the private sector.
  • Increase institutional engagement in technology transfer activities by educating the research community, facilitating and fostering inter-organizational relationships, and promoting innovation throughout the institution.
  • Expand the institution's intellectual property portfolio by promoting existing industry and investor relationships, establishing new ones, and marketing intellectual property to potential investors/partners.
  • Assess, administer, and manage intellectual property generated, including the financial valuation/commercial potential of new technologies.
  • Transfer and commercialize campus technologies for public use and benefit.
  • Oversee all staff and operations of the Technology Transfer Office.
  • Modify and/or develop needed policies and procedures related to intellectual property management.
  • Secure and enforce the appropriate protection of university materials and technologies.
  • Negotiate and execute research collaboration and license agreements, working with internal and external legal counsel, and various other stakeholders both within and outside of the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal and state laws.

Physical and Environmental Demands
