Biology & Chemistry Student Worker

The student worker in Biology and Chemistry will assist departmental faculty and/or staff for tasks needed throughout the department. The student worker in Biology and Chemistry must be referred by a current faculty and/or staff and have completed the course or lab for which they will be assisting. As such, workers may be asked to perform grading, laboratory preparation, office/clerical work, or other tasks as requested by the supervising faculty and/or staff member.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Lab Workers/Graders

1. Assist faculty with the routine laboratory activities for a specific biology or chemistry course.

2. Helping to maintain a safe, instructive atmosphere in the laboratory.

3. Follow all safety guidelines in the laboratory and must assist in enforcing these guidelines for all students in the laboratory.

4. Maintain proper attire for the work/laboratory environment in accordance with the Liberty Way and as directed by the supervisor(s).

5. Be punctual to all meetings scheduled by the course instructor(s) or supervisor.

6. Maintain professional communication with supervising faculty.

7. Be familiar with procedures and calculations involved in an experiment prior to entering the laboratory.

8. Be responsible for grading laboratory reports and/or lab assignments and return them in a timely manner, as directed by supervising faculty.

9. All grading efforts must be completed in the Center for Natural Sciences.

10. Maintain accurate grade and/or attendance records and share these with supervising faculty, while maintaining strict confidence to comply with all FERPA regulations.

11. Ensure that all laboratory reagents and materials/supplies are restocked and that all benches, fume hoods, and other areas are clean and neat before leaving the laboratory.

12. Maintain documentation of their work time and efforts.

13. Undertake other tasks as designated by the supervising faculty/staff.

Office Workers

1. Assist administrative assistants with the routine office activities.

2. Helping to maintain a positive and helpful atmosphere in the office.

3. Follow all safety guideline requirements for working in this department such as completing a safety training course.

4. Maintain professional communication with supervising staff.

5. Be responsible for completing tasks that are given during the shift.

6. Maintain confidentiality of any information that is seen or heard during shift.

7. Must be able to lift approximately 10-15lbs.

8. Must have a high attention to detail when completing tasks.

9. Must be proactive in seeking out ways to assist the department.

10. Be organized and communicate well with other student workers.

11. Understanding of the courses and professors within the department is a plus.

12. Be able to speak to incoming students and parents about LU while they are in the waiting area.

13. Assist with the collection and distribution of mail as needed.

14. Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.

15. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.

Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies

1. Experience working on a computer or tablet.

2. Demonstrate ability and willingness to work cooperatively with students, faculty, and administrators.

3. Demonstrate ability to be instructed by faculty and staff on incoming tasks.

4. Demonstrate reliability with attendance.
