Undergraduate Communication Coach

Undergraduate communication coaches are primarily responsible for one-on-one coaching of undergraduate student visitors to the Writing Center for presentation-related or multimedia appointments during the Fall and Spring semesters. Coaches are expected to possess excellent skills in public speaking, presentation design, and/or graphic design, as well as maintain current knowledge in all formats of undergraduate academic writing (MLA, APA, etc.). Other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

1. Meet with students at the Residential Writing Center to help them develop better presentation skills that can translate to better oral presentations.
2. Work 12-16 hours a week, receive thorough training, and provide valuable resources to residential student presenters.
3. May present in classrooms, create resources, work on special projects, and complete other tasks as deemed necessary.
4. Maintain accurate records of coaching sessions and attendees.
5. Attend mandatory orientation, training sessions, and scheduled meetings (including Mondays, 10:30-11:30 am) as required by the Assistant Director of Residential Writing Services.

Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Current Residential student at Liberty University

2. Cumulative LU GPA of at least 3.0

3. Passed COMS 101 with a grade of A or B

4. Recommendation from a faculty member in the School of Communication & the Arts

5. Strong skills in spoken, written, and visual communication

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Passed SCOM 201 with a grade of A or B

2. Previous tutoring and/or customer service experience

3. Flexible schedule

4. Eligibility for Federal Work Study (additional information may be found here)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coaches students one-on-one.
  • Develops resources on presentation skills.
  • Responds promptly to all communication and submits paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Develops and delivers classroom presentations.
  • Attends Writing Center meetings on Mondays (10:30-11:30am) and at other scheduled times as necessary.
  • Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.
  • Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s Christian model and Mission – Training Champions for Christ.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

  • Current residential student at Liberty University
  • Cumulative LU GPA of at least 3.0
  • Passed COMS 101 with a grade of A or B
  • Recommendation from a faculty member in the School of Communication & the Arts
  • Strong skills in spoken, written, and visual communication
  • Availability to work 12-16 hours per week during department hours of operation
  • Grade of A or B in SCOM 201 preferred
  • Previous tutoring and/or customer service experience preferred
  • Flexible schedule preferred
  • Eligibility for Federal Work Study preferred

Communication and Comprehension

  • Excellent public communication skills, both to assist students and to allow professional representation of Liberty University.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally, visually, and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Computer skills, particularly for creating presentations (MS PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Strong organizational skills.

Problem Solving

  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.

Physical and Sensory Abilities

  • Occasionally required to travel to campus locations.
  • Frequently required to sit for extended periods to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled setting.  It is well lighted, and the noise level is moderate.

Driving Requirements

Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
