Job Summary

The University Laboratory School College & Career Counselor plays a critical role in serving as a planner, counselor and information liaison between students, parents, faculty, and administration in the areas of college and career planning/readiness. 

The University Laboratory School was founded in 1915 as demonstration school for the, now, LSU College of Human Sciences & Education. The school seeks to provide an exemplary education for its students, demonstrate a model education environment, serve as a center for educational innovation and research, provide professional development opportunities for the state's educators, and offer clinical teaching experiences for pre-service teachers. 

Job Responsibilities

Course, College, & Career Advisement - 35%
Provides group and individual counseling to students and parents regarding all areas of college guidance, including, but not limited to, college entrance exams and preparation, college search and selection, college research and goal focused high school planning; Counsels students regarding educational issues such as course and program selection, class scheduling, dropping and adding classes and college/career planning; Creates and submits materials to colleges in support of college applicants, including transcripts, references/recommendations, scholarship awards; Maintains connections with colleges and admissions; representatives including scheduling college visits to the University Laboratory School; Collaborates with the Principal to develop the master schedule; Collaborates with High School Faculty to develop and maintain community partnerships for work-study programs and internships; Collaborates with the Principal to revise/write advisory lesson plans for college and career readiness standards.

Assessment - 15%

Oversees testing programs (PSAT, ACT, AP and aptitude instruments) and provides prep courses as applicable;  Analyzes data and use results to inform stakeholders regarding school improvement; interpret cognitive/aptitude/achievement tests; analyze grade point average in relationship to achievement; Tracks trends in admissions and college counseling fields.

Parent/Student Advisement - 25%

Plans and conducts workshops for parents and students to discuss post-high school educational plans and options; Helps parents and students to understand and utilize the four year plan for career and college planning; Conducts college planning, financial aid and scholarship information sessions for high school families; Provides student and parent updates throughout the year on college application and scholarship information and deadlines

Administrative Duties - 15%
Maintains relevant data on graduating students and upperclassman and prepares reports, as necessary; Manages the dual credit enrollment program and serves as the liaison between higher education dual enrollment partners and the University Laboratory School

Other Duties - 10%

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree in Counseling from an accredited college or university approved by CACREP

Licenses/Certifications

Must meet the Louisiana Department of Education’s requirements for school counselor certification.
 
Must have Certificates prior to hire or must provide the equivalent from another state and update certificate to Louisiana, no later than Seven (7) days before the effective hire date. 

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in Counseling

3+ Years of Experience in an Academic Setting

This position is classified as a safety and security-sensitive position. These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

This position and/or position's responsibilities require work directly with minors. Fingerprinting and a National Sex Offender Registry check are required per FASOP HR-04.

As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
