At the forefront of medical discovery as it relates to understanding the causes of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia, Pennington Biomedical Research Center is a campus of Louisiana State University and conducts basic, clinical and population research. The Center includes Basic Science, Clinical Research, and Population and Public Health, enabling both focused research and translational science. Research at Pennington Biomedical is supported broadly by multiple NIH Research Centers, and includes approximately 65 faculty and 20 postdoctoral fellows who comprise a network of 44 laboratories and 13 highly specialized core service facilities. Pennington Biomedical is located within state-of-the-art research facilities on a 222-acre campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a world-renowned academic research institute of Louisiana State University, is seeking a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Technician in the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory.
The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Technician will play a key role in supporting the core clinical chemistry services of the research center. This position is responsible for performing, analyzing, and interpreting a wide range of biochemical and molecular assays in support of ongoing research studies and clinical investigations. The technologist will ensure accuracy and reliability of test results by following established quality control and safety procedures, maintaining instrumentation, and adhering to regulatory standards. Working closely with principal investigators, research coordinators, and other core laboratory staff, this role contributes to the generation of high-quality laboratory data that advances translational and clinical research. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to scientific integrity and collaboration in a dynamic research environment.
Major Responsibilities
Performs clinical and research analyses in a CAP-accredited laboratory following established protocols and regulatory guidelines.
Reports and documents laboratory results accurately and in a timely manner to support research and clinical study objectives.
Monitors, evaluates, and documents quality control data to ensure analytical accuracy and compliance with CAP and CLIA requirements.
Performs calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments and analytical equipment; coordinates repairs as necessary.
Maintains adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents to support uninterrupted operations.
Writes, reviews, and updates standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory documentation to align with accreditation standards.
Develops and validates new methods of analysis to support emerging research projects and novel study designs.
Coordinates the laboratory components of clinical research trials, ensuring proper sample handling, documentation, and data integrity.
Assists in maintaining CAP and CLIA accreditation through participation in audits, inspections, and continuous quality improvement activities.
Required Qualifications - Medical Technologist
Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS), Medical Technology (MT), Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science, or a related field.
Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a clinical, research, or analytical laboratory setting. Experience in a CAP-accredited or CLIA-certified laboratory preferred.
Current Louisiana license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist–Generalist or Clinical Laboratory ScientistSpecialist.
Working knowledge of CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, and OSHA compliance requirements, along with standard laboratory safety and quality control practices.
Strong analytical and organizational skills; ability to troubleshoot technical issues, manage multiple priorities, and maintain meticulous documentation in a regulated environment.
Required Qualifications - Medical Laboratory Technician
Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science; or three (3) or more years of relevant experience in automated immunochemistry and general chemistry within a clinical or research laboratory setting.
Hands-on experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting analytical instruments used in clinical chemistry and immunoassay testing.
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification (e.g., MLT(ASCP)) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) certification preferred.
Familiarity with CAP, CLIA, and OSHA regulatory requirements and standard laboratory safety procedures. • Demonstrated proficiency in laboratory techniques, data accuracy, and quality control; strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; effective communication and teamwork skills in a multidisciplinary research environment.
