Job Summary:  

The Mental Health Wellness Coordinator for the Baltimore Police Department plays a crucial role in fostering a holistic approach to the well-being of all departmental members (sworn officers, civilians, and professional staff), their families, and retirees. This position emphasizes promoting mental resilience, and overall wellness. The Wellness Coordinator works collaboratively within the Officer Safety & Wellness (OSW) Section, alongside the Early Intervention Unit (EIU) and the Retiree/Employee Affairs Unit (EAU).

Essential Functions:

The Mental Health Wellness Coordinator's responsibilities are multifaceted, encompassing the design, implementation, and oversight of various wellness programs and initiatives.

  • Program Design and Implementation: This includes developing comprehensive programs covering mental health, stress management, and suicide prevention.
  • Mental Health Support and Awareness: The role involves coordinating mental wellbeing activities, organizing training on mental health, peer support, and suicide prevention, and facilitating mental health awareness programs. They help create an environment where staff can discuss mental health openly and confidentially and coordinate access to confidential counseling and culturally competent mental health services.
  • Wellness and Health Promotion: Responsibilities include organizing mental health activities like mindfulness and managing mental health for all employees. They provide guidance substance abuse prevention, sleep, and work-life balance, and promote regular strategies for managing your mental health in a stressful environment. Collaboration and Resource Coordination: The coordinator collaborates with internal and external partners to organize wellness events, works with leadership and health professionals to design programs, and establishes partnerships with community organizations to support personnel and families.
  • Program Evaluation and Improvement: This involves monitoring program effectiveness through data analysis and feedback and adjusting programs to meet evolving needs.
  • Critical Incident Support: As part of the Officer Safety & Wellness Section, the coordinator responds to critical incidents, such as police-involved shootings and line-of-duty deaths, to provide support and ensure immediate access to mental health clinicians for those involved in traumatic events. Administrative and Reporting: They provide administrative and analytical support, collect data for reports, and analyze findings to create comprehensive reports.
  • Communication and Training: This includes providing training on wellness topics like stress management and suicide prevention, developing health education programs, and maintaining updates on health and wellness trends. Although the candidate WILL NOT have a caseload of employee clients, they will be expected to facilitate the employee to one of several mental health counseling organizations that provide free and confidential counseling for BPD employees. Administrative and Reporting: They provide administrative and analytical support, collect data for reports, and analyze findings to create comprehensive reports.
  • Communication and Training: This includes providing training on wellness topics like stress management and suicide prevention, developing health education programs, and maintaining updates on health and wellness trends. Minimum Qualifications:     

Education: Master’s degree; Must be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).

AND 

Experience: Have three years of experience, preferred working with law enforcement

Background Check                                        

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed. 

Probation 

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory 1-year probation.
