UVA Studio Woodshop Safety Assistant (Student Wages)

Undergrad student wage position for less than 20 hours per week.

The Studio Art Program within the Department of Art seeks a qualified student to fill a temporary position within the Studio art building as a Woodshop Safety Assistant.  The woodshop assistant is required to have a basic understanding of hand and power tools, in addition to one year of woodshop experience.  The successful candidate must be able to perform basic woodshop tasks, and attention to details, demonstrate an ability to work independently and show initiative and problem-solving skills.  Duties may include oversight in the wood and metal shops and training students on how to use the shop equipment safely.  In addition, the candidate must perform work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations.  Computer experience using Word and Excel a plus.  On the job training will be provided. Work-Study Student preferred, but not required.

Position duties include but not limited to:

·       Keep clay/plaster and general meeting room clean

·       Help with maintaining courtyard cleanliness

·       Unplug and store extension cords

·       Make sure all secondary containers are labeled clearly (no abbreviations)

·       General help with sculpture equipment maintenance

·       Help with preparation of sculpture materials/processes

Qualifications:

·       Experience with hand tools, power tools a must.

·       UVA Student- Work-Study Eligibility Preferred.

·       Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and can work effectively with colleagues and the general public.

  • Anticipated Compensation: $15.00 Hourly

  • Anticipated Assignment Dates: August 26, 2025 - May 8, 2026

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
