We are looking for a student with experience and/or interest in photography and associated book work or library work. This is for the Digital Production Group or DPG, a UVA Library unit in Shannon, that photographs rare but still circulating materials -- items we consider to be 'medium rare.'   We anticipate hiring one student for the Spring 2026 semester.

Starting pay is $16.71/hr. with a weekly work commitment of about 10 hours expected.   Following paid training, weekday hours from M-F can be flexible within daily windows extending from 9-5.

The Digital Production Group (DPG) at the University of Virginia Library provides a full suite of services that create, manage, deliver, and expand access to the University of Virginia's distinctive digital collections.  The DPG's primary mission is to convert the Library's rare, medium rare and unique materials to digital formats which the U.Va. community can use to support research and instructional needs.

The purpose of this position is to digitize and document materials under the auspices of the UVA Library. The main work of this position will be to assist project managers in the digitization of materials primarily from the University of Virginia Library's still-circulating and medium rare collections.

Additional duties include but not limited to:

  • Care and handling of rare and unique library materials (books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, negatives, etc.)
  • Software packages: CaptureOne, Adobe Photoshop and the department's tracking system and project processing software.
  • Equipment: Principally Atiz book scanners using Canon cameras and Epson flatbed scanner uses. There may be some opportunity to learn/use other professional cameras and tools for rare material work.

Positions are to extend through the spring semester, subject to any changes that could alter the University’s schedule. Continuation of this work may also extend into the summer or fall of 2026, also contingent on the University's schedule.

Please include a cover letter and resume with your application. If you have an active FWS award for the spring semester that can be put towards this job, please note this in your application.   This is not required for consideration or hiring.

This position will require a background check.
