This position is located at the Wellington Webb Building, located at 201 W Colfax Ave. Denver, CO 80202.
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees’ physical work location is based upon the position’s job duties and requirements, customer service and responsiveness, team and individual performance, and business needs and requirements. Our current practice requires in-office work for all employees for a minimum of three days per week. Business needs and initial onboarding may require additional days in the office.

The City and County of Denver’s Community Planning and Development Department (CPD) is responsible for visionary city planning, ensuring safe, responsible, sustainable building, and enforcing the city’s adopted regulations – including the Denver Mechanical Code, Denver Plumbing Code, Denver Fuel Gas Code, Denver Energy Code, and other ordinances. CPD works with Denver’s communities to prepare land use plans, as well as regulations for building use and design, that guide the city’s growth, enhancement, and preservation. Our staff also reviews, permits, and inspects development applications to ensure that future construction meets the community-led regulations laid out in Denver's zoning codes as well as meets the rigorous standards of the city's building, fire, and energy codes. CPD is seeking Licensed Professional (Mechanical) Engineer candidates to fill a Mechanical and Plumbing Plan Review Engineering Supervisor position. The position is responsible for supervising the work of six or more Professional Engineers, and associated personnel involved in the review of construction documents and specifications for compliance with the Denver Mechanical Code, Denver Plumbing Code, Denver Fuel Gas Code, Denver Energy Code, and appurtenant standards for new and existing buildings as it relates to mechanical, plumbing, life safety, energy, and related requirements. This crucial role will have an impact throughout Denver by ensuring compliance to regulatory codes and engineering standards for various buildings throughout the City, by helping guide the direction of the plan review work group, by providing input into policies and procedures as it relates to permitting, and by coordinating with the mechanical and plumbing inspection workgroups. This position will act as the mechanical and plumbing engineering supervisory lead and reports to the Building Plan Review Manager.
Specifically, as a Mechanical and Plumbing Plan Review Engineering Supervisor you will:
Manage workload of professional engineers and support staff through assignment and reallocation of work, projects, and customer-facing duties
Communicate with design professionals to explain engineering standards specific to their project
Interprets the intent and applies the requirements of codes specific to mechanical, plumbing, life safety, energy, and associated standards for design and construction
Assist the Plan Review Manager and/or Building Official in the development of Denver-specific code amendments, standards, and policy at the local, regional and/or national level
Provide exemplary customer service to both internal and external customers including colleagues, contractors, design professionals, developers, homeowners, tenants, and others through professional written and verbal communications
Use data analytics and refined metrics to optimize workload and productivity across the team while making recommendations on staffing and budget needs, and supporting changes in process
Oversee the development of, and directly engage in, training through new employee onboarding, continuing education, mentoring, and coaching
Ensure compliance with departmental and city-wide timelines for review quality, productivity and due dates
Work with the mechanical and plumbing inspections chiefs to identify and implement innovations toward improved efficiencies for internal and external stakeholders
Use the tools of performance management, establish S.M.A.R.T. goals, monitor and guide team members in their work, and implement disciplinary procedures when necessary
Perform other related duties as assigned

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
A minimum of three years of senior level engineering experience with a wide variety of project types including homes, multi-family residential, and light and large commercial
At least three (3) years of supervisory experience with multiple direct reports
Ability to work with internal and external customers to identify solutions to complex design and code compliance problems by thinking ‘outside the box’ to advance projects toward approval
Project Management experience, and experience leading a team
Willingness to motivate and help others
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
Ability to communicate effectively – verbally and in writing
Efficiently demonstrates excellent time/work management skills
Works well under pressure and able to multitask
Strong attention to detail and highly organized
Ability to understand, interpret, and enforce the intent of the codes
Solutions oriented – working with customers to provide creative solutions to challenges
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
Required Minimum Qualifications
Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Architecture.
Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of senior engineering or architecture experience.
Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.
License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers at the time of application. Or requires registration as an Architect by the Colorado State Board of Registration at the time of application.
Registration in another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado registration at completion of probation.
Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
