Job Description

University Police Department (UPD), Southern Command invites applications for Community Service Supervisor (CSS) (Classification - Security Officer Supervisor, Title Series - 11.260). We appreciate your interest in employment at our growing division. 

PROFILE

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) was established in 1865 and is currently comprised of two doctoral-granting universities, a state college, four comprehensive community colleges and one environmental research institute. The public system of higher education in Nevada is governed by the Board of Regents serving over 100,000 students and 15,000 employees. 

UPD, Southern Command, is a full service category I law enforcement agency that serves the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the College of Southern Nevada, the Desert Research Institute and Nevada State College. The department consists of 120 employees and has responsibility for the public safety needs of 80,000 students, faculty and staff over an 800 square mile service area. Law enforcement operations consists of full and part time sworn peace officers, a full service 9-1-1 Center, K-9 operations; emergency management operations with a fully functional EOC and oversight of major special events hosting more than a million visitors a year to various events.

ROLE of the POSITION

UPD is conducting a recruitment for Community Service Supervisor (CSS). This positions may be assigned to any campus to include the College of Southern Nevada, Desert Research Institute, Nevada State College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Under direction of a Lieutenant, this position will perform a variety of security related tasks for various NSHE campuses under UPD, Southern Command. 

JOB DESCRIPTION

CSS will operate under limited supervision and incumbents are responsible for supervising, training, scheduling, evaluating and coordinating subordinate Community Service Officers (CSOs) and also perform the full range of duties described in the CSO concept.

CSS responsibilities will also include but are not limited to providing security for State buildings and grounds; providing protective services to buildings and occupants; enforcing applicable laws, rules, regulations and policies; maintaining security of assigned buildings or facilities and surrounding property by conducting visual surveillance through camera monitors or direct observation; monitoring State/NSHE property, displays and individuals entering and leaving buildings and take appropriate action according to department policy. Patrolling buildings and grounds, checking windows, locks, doors and security systems for damage or possible breach of security; following established procedures and guidelines when security or safety violations occur and other general duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of experience providing protective services to buildings and occupants, enforcing laws, rules, regulations, and policies and maintaining proper use, control and accountability of keys and electronic access and surveillance equipment; OR one year of experience as a Security Officer in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (required at time of application)

Working knowledge of: modern security and surveillance equipment. Ability to: write routine business correspondence such as incident reports, performance evaluations and work schedules using business software including spreadsheets and databases; mediate between contending parties and groups; operate, inspect and adjust security systems, equipment, and machinery to ensure operational use and to detect evidence of tampering; monitor and authorize entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises; patrol assigned premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates; analyze situations accurately and recommend or take effective courses of action including thinking and acting quickly in emergencies; communicate clearly using electronic communication devices; operate electronic security devices; use a computer to enter and retrieve information, and all knowledge, skills, and abilities required at the lower level. 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (typically acquired on the job)

Working knowledge of: supervisory principles and practices; applicable federal and State laws, rules and regulations in order to keep facilities and grounds secure; agency policies and procedures related to security; policies, procedures, and strategies used to promote effective local, State, or national security operations for the protection of people, property, and facilities. Ability to: train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff. 

Position must maintain certification in CPR and First Aid, and AED. Will undergo an employment training course and a field training period upon hire.

SALARY

Grade 29, Step 1, salary $50,153.76. "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
