Job Overview

The Hatchery Worker (Egg Setter) position is responsible for handling, setting, and monitoring eggs throughout the incubation process within the hatchery. This role supports daily hatchery operations by transferring eggs from storage to setters, performing routine equipment and hallway checks, and ensuring eggs are accurately placed for incubation. Team members in this role must follow all animal welfare, safety, hygiene, and biosecurity standards while maintaining accurate records and working closely with others to support efficient hatchery operations.
 

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Physical role requiring standing, bending, lifting, twisting, and reaching

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs

  • Work environment may include hot, cold, wet, and humid conditions

  • Flexible schedule required, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
     

Shift & Location Details

  • Shift: 2nd Shift

  • Scheduled Days: Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday

  • Hours: Nights, 9:00 PM – 5:00 AM

  • Department Location: Hatchery Building – Dechard, TN
     

External Rehire Eligibility

  • Accepting rehires: Yes

  • Cannot have worked with Tyson more than 3 times

  • Rehire waiting period: 181 days
     

Job Requirements

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED preferred

  • Basic math skills required

  • Must pass a background check

  • Completion of Animal Well-Being (AWB) training required
     

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Dependable and punctual with consistent attendance

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision after training

  • Effective teamwork and communication skills
     

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Lift 25 lbs overhead repetitively

  • Lift up to 40 lbs occasionally

  • Push and pull farm racks weighing in excess of 800 lbs

  • Perform repetitive squatting, bending, lifting, reaching, pushing, and pulling

  • Work in wet, hot, and humid conditions for 8–10 hours per shift
     

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Slip-resistant shoes/boots: Required

  • Hearing protection: Required

  • Eye protection: Required

  • Gloves: Required when handling eggs, equipment, or chemicals as designated

  • Any other PPE required by hatchery policy
     

Job Safety Analysis (JSA)

Potential Hazards & Controls

  • Musculoskeletal Strain – Use proper lifting and body mechanics; seek assistance for heavy loads

  • Slips, Trips, and Falls – Maintain clean, unobstructed work areas; use caution on wet surfaces

  • Temperature Exposure – Wear appropriate clothing; stay hydrated during warm or humid conditions

  • Equipment Hazards – Stay alert around setters, hatchers, and moving farm racks; follow safety procedures

  • Noise Exposure – Wear hearing protection in designated areas

  • Chemical Irritation – Use appropriate PPE when handling cleaning or sanitizing agents

  • Handle eggs carefully and accurately according to hatchery procedures

  • Set eggs correctly by flock, setter, and location

  • Perform and document routine checks of setters, hatchers, and hallways

  • Maintain accurate records and submit required paperwork on time

  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and biosecure

  • Communicate equipment, product, safety concerns, or injuries promptly to management

  • Support hatchery operations with flexibility, reliability, and attention to detail
