About The Role
Manages surgical program including daily workflow, personnel assignments, training, equipment, and supplies. Performs selected surgical procedures that require advanced expertise/experience. Facilitates all aspects of surgery and surgical support functions according to SOPs and GLP. Supports study supervisor(s) and study director(s) by performing and assisting with surgical procedure coordination and execution on research studies.
 

What You'll Do Here

  • Follow, perform, and develop SOP’s and protocols for surgery and surgical support of study and stock animals

  • Manage the daily workflow for the surgical program

  • Coordinate with safety assessment and laboratory animal resources to plan, perform, and create surgical procedures in SOP and protocol form

  • Creation and maintenance of the surgical training program and continued training of personnel to GLP and company standards using written instruction, simulation, practical, and vendor training program resources

  • Ensure continued function and maintenance of surgical equipment

  • Order and inventory supplies in the surgical facilities including study specific supplies

  • Operate selected laboratory equipment (e.g. surgical, imaging, telemetry and ECG equipment)

  • Participate in project and study planning meetings

  • Communicate with clients regarding surgical procedures and facilities

  • Legibly records and reviews raw study and facility data

  • Recognize animal behavior and health status, and reports to appropriate personnel

  • Monitor and report study changes to study director and all appropriate personnel

  • Attend department meetings, reviews, and other pertinent training sessions

  • Maintain and perform general facility cleaning, stocking, and inventory

  • Create, review, and revise SOPs relating to animals, technical procedures, and facility issues

  • Perform and train staff on technical procedures on animals

  • Handle and restrain laboratory animals, including but not limited to, mice, rats, rabbits, canines, and non-human primates

  • Cross-training opportunities available

  • Perform duties of a research specialist or study supervisor

  • Assist with creation of study and staff schedules

What You'll Need to Succeed

  • BA/BS specializing in in a scientific discipline

  • Experience or familiarity with at least one of the following: surgical technique, telemetry, ECG, EEG, or similar procedure in animal species; preclinical GLP experience preferred

  • Over 4 years related work experience

  • LATG certification or equivalent preferred

  • Basic computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office suite; adaptable to new software

  • English proficiency both written and verbal; general reading, writing and verbal communication skills

  • Basic maths skills

  • Work cross functionally on process improvements

  • High level attention to detail

  • Multi-tasking skills and maintain organization in a fast paced, changing environment

  • Effectively manage change

  • Readily adapts to new projects

  • Positive attitude toward work and co-workers

  • Comfortable communicating with all levels of management and employees

  • Identify and resolve problems as they are encountered
