Job Summary
Serves as a supervisor for Respiratory staff who provide direct patient care. Also oversees department operations to ensure efficiency and availability of resources to address patient needs. Is an active member of the leadership team, supporting overall department functions to ensure compliance with hospital policies and regulations. Applies scientific knowledge, technical expertise and theory to practical clinical problems and is often required to exercise clinical judgment. Acts as liaison to physicians and other members of the health care team. Responsible for oversight of FV Transport services program within the region.

**This is a full-time position working four 10-hour days.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises patient care activities on assigned shift. Plans for staffing needs of upcoming shifts, adjusts staff schedules as needed. Provides a complete report of patient status and department activities to the incoming charge therapist. Assures appropriate resources are available and accessible.
  • Performs and maintains Respiratory Care Practitioner competencies in accordance with all quality and safety standards. Understands expected outcomes and with that knowledge, determines techniques for ensuring optimal patient care. Offers insight and direction in dealing with clinical situations and responds accordingly. Anticipates, identifies, and responds to potential emergent/urgent situations.
  • Leads department process and quality improvement activities including continuing education, research, quality assurance and cost reduction measures. Applies current evidence based research into own practice; introduces current research into clinical practice. Generates ideas for research and evidence-based practice.
  • Collaborates with the RCS Educator in the development of training/competency plans to facilitate competency of staff in new and existing equipment/procedures. Assures appropriate action plans for validation of competencies. Supports respiratory education activities with the department. Collaborates with the RCS Educator regarding staff development needs.
  • Contributes to developing and attaining long range objectives for the Respiratory Care department, including, but not limited to: financial goals, operations improvement, quality improvement, resource utilization and clinical practice enhancements. Functions as an active member of the leadership team; assists in making department decisions.
  • Facilitates the development and revision of policies and procedures. Monitors development and revision of applicable teaching tools. Represents department on multidisciplinary committees/work groups.
  • Communicates significant clinical issues; keeps manager apprised of workflow issues and supervisory activities. Seeks counsel and or assistance from RCS Leadership Team and Medical Director when appropriate.
  • Assures staff compliance with accurate departmental billing practices.
  • Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which includes coaching on performance, completes performance reviews and overall staff morale. Recommends hiring, terminations, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the Children’s Organizational Code of Ethics and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to Children's business.

Education:

  • Current supervisors who graduated prior to January 1, 2005 will be grandfathered with current CRT credential required
  • Completion of respiratory therapy program required
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred


Experience:

  • 2+ years of adult and/or pediatric experience, including pediatric/neonatal disease and special respiratory care procedures required
  • Previous experience as team lead and /or participation in teams/groups required
  • Experience with an EHR strongly preferred

Licenses and Certifications:

  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required
  • License Respiratory Care Practitioner (28) - State of Wisconsin required
  • NRP-Neonatal Resuscitation Provider - American Academy of Pediatrics/American Heart Association within 180 Days required
  • PALS-Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council within 180 Days required
  • RRT-Registered Respiratory Therapist - The National Board for Respiratory Care required
  • NPS Neonatal Pediatric Specialty RCP - The National Board for Respiratory Care within 1 Year required
