Reports To: CFAES Associate Dean of Operations and the Animal Sciences Department Chair

Position Summary

As part of the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES), the Assistant Director – Animal Complex ensures that the physical spaces and resources support the teaching, Extension, and research missions of CFAES. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Operations and the Animal Sciences Department Chair, this role provides expert oversight of day-to-day facility operations and staff management.

Facilities under direct responsibility include:

  • MALC (classrooms/labs, arena, equine, poultry, swine, ruminants)
  • Dairy
  • Commodity Barn
  • Nutrient Handling Facility

Key Responsibilities

Facility Oversight

  • Ensure continuity of operations through maintenance coordination with staff, FOD, and contractors
  • Troubleshoot mechanical systems and initiate appropriate responses
  • Oversee cleaning/sanitation in collaboration with the Biosecurity Manager
  • Maintain documentation of maintenance, repairs, compliance, and biosecurity adherence
  • Lead arena setup, management, and evaluation of space use

Staff Supervision

  • Serve as first point of contact and supervisor for barn managers
  • Direct reports include:
    • Poultry Manager
    • Equine Manager
    • Biosecurity and Swine Manager
    • Ruminant Manager
    • Dairy Manager
    • Assistant Dairy Manager
    • Logistics/Inventory Assistant Manager

Collaboration & Communication

  • Coordinate facility use for teaching, Extension, and research
  • Maintain clear communication with academic programs, faculty, and staff
  • Provide guidance to facility users and visitors
  • Apply conflict management and customer service skills

Professional Engagement

  • Participate in professional development and continuing education
  • Maintain certifications and soft skill development
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and orientations
  • Support emergency response teams and interdisciplinary CFAES teams
  • Assist with outreach events, Extension programs, tours, and student activities
  • Serve on committees as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 5 years of relevant experience required
  • 8–12 years of relevant experience preferred
  • Advanced degree may be desirable

Pay range $75,700-$98,900/annual salary

The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit’s available budget, and the candidate’s qualifications
