The Research Senior Technician provides advanced research support by independently conducting standard laboratory activities within a high energy physics (HEP) laboratory. Responsibilities include cleaning, performing surface preparation, and preparing samples for testing, as well as conducting quality assurance testing. The role sets up, operates, and maintains sputtering machines, evaporators, and other laboratory equipment.

This position designs and assembles custom electronic circuits and laboratory equipment and develops, maintains, and modifies software and data acquisition systems to support experimental work. The role assists with the design and execution of research experiments, including data collection, analysis, and equipment procurement.

Works with a high level of autonomy on routine assignments, applies established procedures and precedent to resolve issues, and may provide guidance or training to less experienced colleagues.

Minimum Education Required

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant experience as demonstrated by one of the following:

    • No prior experience required with a Bachelor’s degree

    • Two (2) years of relevant experience with an Associate’s degree

    • Four (4) years of relevant experience with a High School diploma

  • Broad knowledge of standard research processes, tools, and methodologies, typically gained through education, training, or experience.

  • Ability to independently perform routine research tasks, analyze data, and document results using established procedures and protocols.

  • Ability to identify and resolve routine research-related issues, evaluate solutions for less common problems, and escalate complex matters as appropriate.

Additional Information:

The pay range for this job profile is $19.28 - $25.19. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.

As a department in the division of Natural and Mathematical Sciences in the College of the Arts and Sciences, the Department of Physics occupies the Physics Research Building as well as instructional and advising space in Smith Laboratory, the former home of the department. The department is the home to multiple internationally renowned centers and research facilities.
