Volunteer Description:
Unpaid volunteer contributing time to Intermountain Healthcare in various roles.
Volunteer Opportunities
Patient Care
Provide compassionate companionship and emotional support to hospice patients and their families. Activities may include:
- Social visits and conversation
- Reading aloud
- Playing games
- Music or art activities
- Writing or recording personal and family histories
Respite Care
Offer temporary relief to caregivers who may be physically and emotionally exhausted. This allows caregivers time to:
- Run errands
- Exercise
- Rest or spend time alone
- Attend appointments
Bereavement Support
Support families throughout the dying and grieving process by:
- Assisting with group meetings and memorial services
- Providing follow-up support to families
- Creating hand molds for patients
- Working closely with social workers and chaplains
Office Support
Assist hospice staff with administrative tasks, including:
- Sending birthday cards
- Assembling mailing packets
- Making supply calls to patients
- Helping with hospice events
Volunteer Qualifications
Volunteers must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Be able to work independently within the scope of assigned duties
- Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Be a good listener and practice active listening
- Maintain and respect professional boundaries
- Possess sound mental and emotional health
- Be sensitive to patients and families
- Work well with diverse populations and family dynamics
- Stay calm in stressful situations
- Be self-motivated, flexible, and adaptable
- Commit to at least 2 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months
- Have reliable transportation (service area spans Eagle Mountain to Santaquin)
