Required Minimum Qualifications:

• Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant or completion of a recognized one year Medical Assistant Program, or Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to: pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology.

Preferred Qualifications:

BLS certification.

Experience in a clinical setting, particularly in managing patient records and supporting providers.

This position follows a 12-month work period.

As a Medical Assistant II at the Thielen Student Health Center, you’ll play a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of the Iowa State student community. You’ll assist in both clinical and clerical duties to help create a seamless, welcoming experience for patients and contribute to a holistic approach to student health.

Under direct supervision of a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or registered nurse, perform technical, patient care, and related clerical functions in an ambulatory setting by coordinating patient intake and clinic flow.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible for facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients and staff.

• Assist in clinic with physical examination of patients and related treatments, including but not limited to: patient history, medication records, allergies, and immunizations.

• Manage internal and external medical records to ensure that accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.

• Administer routine medications within the MA scope of practice.

• Collect routine laboratory specimens, perform electrocardiograms, and obtain vital signs.

• Identify vaccination needs for specific patient populations.

• Perform clerical tasks including answering phones, scheduling appointments, and communicating with other departments.

• Assist in obtaining insurance prior authorizations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of medical records documentation requirements.

• Knowledge of medical instruments and supplies.

• Knowledge of routine medications.

• Knowledge and ability to perform CPR and emergency care procedures.

• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.

• Ability to maintain a courteous and respectful approach toward patients, visitors, and fellow staff members.

• Ability to work safely and willingness to comply with special safety and health precautions including universal precautions.

• Ability to provide care with regard to patient condition and age.

• Ability to use supplies and equipment in a cost-efficient manner.

• Ability to maintain personal appearance in accordance with dress code.

• Ability to be punctual, dependable and flexible (so as to alter work schedule to meet unit/patient needs).

• Ability to read and understand instructions and guidelines and to read data indicators.

• Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
