A Radiation Safety Specialist provides support services to the Radiation Safety Officer of Advocate Health. This individual will perform a variety of tasks for AH facilities that are required by the applicable state Radiation Protection Section, the Joint Commission, and other regulatory agencies. Duties or job-related tasks will focus on regulatory issues related to radiation protection and the management of radioactive materials.

Essential Functions

1. As a support component for the Radiation Safety Officer and the Radiation Safety Program, the following duties are required:

  • Dosimetry Program Management: Involves the distribution, record management, and collection of radiation monitoring devices for AH facilities. Reviews radiation exposure potential and assigns proper radiation monitoring. Reviews personnel monitoring reports and maintains recordkeeping system. Notifies individuals of high readings and completes investigations as required. Counsels declared pregnant radiation workers, assigns radiation monitoring and reviews monitoring results
  • X-Ray Physics Testing: Are performed on a regularly scheduled basis. Measurements are made according to applicable state Radiation Protection, Joint Commission and other regulatory standards. Notifies Radiology Engineering of equipment deficiencies and maintains records system for future regulatory review.
  • Radioactive Waste Management: Includes ongoing management and inventory of radioactive waste to include contamination and exposure surveys. Processes waste for disposal and maintains required records.
  • Regulatory Audits: Routine audits of Nuclear Medicine, PET, research labs, and Radiation Oncology. These are task-driven audits directed and reviewed by the RSO or his delegate. Audits are performed at Advocate Health Charlotte and outlying Advocate Health facilities.
  • Receipt and Shipment of Radioactive Materials: Performs check-in or shipment surveys and procedures for radioactive packages. Prepares shipments in accordance with DOT regulations. Maintains recordkeeping system.
  • Assist RSO or medical physicist with physics testing of Nuclear Medicine, PET, CT, and MRI in support of ACR accreditation programs.
  • Provide radiation safety services to AH facilities as directed by RSO or his delegate. Functions independently to provide these radiation safety services and schedules work individually with the facility.
  • Provides resources and guidance to employees on matters of radiation safety.

2. Assist in the performance of clinical procedures or research projects:

  • Assists Radiation Oncology personnel in radiopharmaceutical therapy procedures. Provides radiation safety direct oversight of radiopharmaceutical therapy procedures. Determines radiation safety restrictions and provides instruction for nursing staff and family members. Determines and documents patient radiation release.
  • Assists Nuclear Medicine personnel with radiation safety services required to augment therapeutic or diagnostic procedures both inside and outside of the Radiology department. Provides instructions to family members and medical staff. Determines and documents patient release.
  • Assists Special Procedures personnel with radiation safety services required to augment therapeutic procedures using radioactive materials and radiation sources. Provides radiation safety instructions to family members. Surveys the IR room following the procedure and determines release status of the room.
  • Organizes files related to clinical procedures if regulatory compliance issues are involved.
  • Assists in clinical or technical staff throughout Advocate Health as directed by the RSO, or his delegate, to support the radiation safety aspect of the procedure.
  • Maintains regulatory files for clinical research protocols throughout Advocate Health. Record management is restricted to documents required for radiation safety issues or requirements.

3. Provides support for regulatory inspections from several different agencies:

  • Provides information and resources for regulatory agencies as directed by the RSO.
  • Assists or performs duties required for safety drills or exercises directed by Duke Power, the Charlotte Fire Dept., or any other institution requiring a readiness plan on the part of the healthcare system.
  • Assists department Quality Assurance and Compliance Coordinator in the ongoing QA process for the healthcare system. Tasks are restricted to those related to radiation safety.
  • Provides information or support to Radiology or hospital administration as it relates to the provision of radiation safety record-keeping or tasks.

Minimum Job Requirements

Education

Graduate of an Accredited 2-year program in Radiologic Technology, Nuclear Medicine Technology or Radiation Therapy.

Certification / License

ARRT or CNMT

Work Experience

Minimum of three years' experience required.

Physical Requirements

Requires moderate to heavy physical efforts in lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies. Strenuous physical effort may be required while assisting patients. Requires unrestricted walking, standing, reaching, stooping, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling and lifting. Must be able to read and understand patient orders and technical materials. Motor coordination is needed to operate heavy and delicate equipment. Intact sense of sight and hearing for distances of up to 20 feet is necessary.

Preferred Job Requirements

Education

Bachelor's Degree preferred.

Focus on Health Physics, Medical Physics, Radiological Health, Radiologic Technology or related field preferred.

Certification / License

  • Certified Health Physicist by the American Board of Health Physics
  • Certified Medical Health Physicist by the American Board of Medical Physicists
  • Certified Diagnostic Medical Physicist by the American Board of Radiology
