Summary
Reviews a variety of reports for clinical and demographic information, assigns appropriate ICD-9-CM and/or ICD-10-CM/PCS diagnosis/procedure codes and/or CPT/HCPC procedure codes and enters this information into the electronic system for the purpose of maintaining a complete and accurate clinical data base. Production coding includes but not limited to Ancillary, ER's Walk-in Clinic Observation/Outpatient in Bed. Outpatient Surgicals, Series Accounts. Queries provider for clarifying documentation and other documentation as needed, audits provider documentation to ensure compliance with documentation and coding guidelines.
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Certification, Registration & Licensure
Certification required: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC). CPC credentialed coders with hospital experience and proven competency will be considered.
Experience
Minimum of 1 year coding experience in a health care setting.
Responsibilities
Processes work with specific quality standards consistent within the industry.
Processes work with specific productivity standards consistent within the industry.
Performs assigned work in order of assignment or service date. Manages work flow queues and reports
any barriers to work completion.
Demonstrates competency to perform role and utilizes references tools made available to ensure
standardization and quality in process.
Able to perform all functions of role utilizing effective use of systems and following proper protocol.
Protects patients health care information according to departmental and organizational standards.
Queries providers according to the AHIMA code of ethics and general query guidelines. Coder stays up to
date with current industry standards and formulates queries with accurate and credible content and
clinical indicators to support the reason for querying.
Works to resolve billing denials or inquiries.
