Job Details:
The Nurse Extern collaborates with the Clinical Nurse to assist in direct patient care activities as assigned to meet unit needs. The Nurse Extern, under supervision of a Registered Nurse, interacts with an interdisciplinary team to promote the optimal health potential of the patient and family, delivering competent nursing care based on a documented assessment of the patient/family needs and the hospital mission. The Nurse Extern promotes a patient and family experience-oriented environment and acts as a change agent to meet the rapidly changing census and needs of all customers-both internal and external.
All candidates for the Dayton Children's Nursing Externship program must demonstrate they have satisfied the academic requirements of the partnering academic institution, up to and including a high school diploma or GED as validated by the academic institution. The student and academic institution will ensure that Dayton Children's receives a document from the academic institution which confirms the high school diploma or GED have been verified prior to the student being considered for employment.
Program Eligibility
• Currently enrolled at Wright State University or Cedarville University with graduation no later than the spring following your externship.
• If attending another accredited nursing program, you can still apply for the externship. If accepted into the program, you will need to enroll as a non-degree seeking student at Wright State University in order to participate in the program.

Externships are available in the following pediatric specialty areas:
- Behavioral health
- Emergency department
- Hematology/oncology
- Home care
- House float
- Pediatric intensive care unit (PICU)
- Perioperative services
- Newborn intensive care unit (NICU)
- Specialty pediatrics
- Transitional care unit (TCU)
Program Eligibility

- Completion of all junior-level courses
- Completion of pediatric or maternal child rotation required
- Completed references from two nursing faculty members. A professor recommendation is needed because it provides an external, credible perspective on your academic abilities, work ethic, and potential for success in the extern program.
