The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) of Diabetes Education, in conjunction with the Manager of Sepsis and Diabetes is responsible for the operational management of the Diabetes Program and educator staff. The ANM directly supervises the staff of the department and assists with the coordination of the diabetes education program for NGHS. In conjunction with the Manager, the ANM provides oversight of the Diabetes staff, monitoring and facilitating maintenance of staff qualification, and providing consultative review and recommendation on diabetes clinical management to the staff to ensure quality and individualized patient care. Also, in conjunction with the Manager, the ANM oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) accredited program at all sites and ensures that the National Standards for DSME are met and maintained at all times. The ANM assists the Diabetes Educators with day-to-day problem solving and facilitates communication between care team members, management and frontline staff. Provides a variety of patient education programs to meet the needs of the physicians, nursing staff and students, inpatients and families, outpatients and families, other medical disciplines, and the community at large. Teaches patients of all ages. Content for teaching includes Type 1, Type 2, Gestational diabetes, Insulin Pump and other content as requested. This position will care for patients in the child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups. Employee performs clinical duties in accordance with population specific guidelines and adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as outlined in policy and procedures. The ANM assists in the advancement of the professional practice environment by communicating the NGHS nursing strategic direction and focusing on activities that support the nursing strategic direction. Provides nursing involvement support for Professional Nursing Governance and the NDNQI nursing quality workgroups including coaching team members in their professional participation. Assists with overall clinical governance and other projects as assigned.
Licensure or other certifications: Licensed to practice as an RN in Georgia. CDE within two (2) years of hire.
Educational Requirements: A degree in nursing (either BSN or MSN).
Minimum Experience: Three (3) years of direct care RN nursing experience with a minimum of one year in an acute care facility.
Other: Professional Organization membership within one month of hire in to the role.
Preferred Licensure or other certifications:
Preferred Educational Requirements: A Masters Degree (Nursing or other is possessing a BSN) within five (5) years.
Preferred Experience: Previous staff development and education experience. Relevant clinical experience.

Coordinates activities of patient care team in the department and actively monitors the quality of care delivered.
Assesses, coaches and evaluates staff’s level of clinical practice. Ensures that nurses are current in competency, assessments, licensure, certifications, and other annual training. Actively works with his/her leadership team to coach staff, recommends and design education and training to meet the clinical needs of the patients/staff served by the unit.
Routinely interacts with physician customers. Supports his/her nursing staff in maintaining effective and positive interactions with physicians. Coordinates communication between unit team members and attending physicians or clinical ancillary staff to ensure appropriateness of care and outcome planning for the patients on their unit(s).
Coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees. Participates actively in the planning and distribution of patient assignments.
Maintains regular ongoing contact/communication with all educators. Responsible for working with Manager to identify employee strengths, development needs, skills, interpersonal and personal style and relate those to the business needs and challenges faced by the team.
Actively supports and promotes a professional practice model that encourages staff participation in the development of clinical standards, and is collaborative, collegial and utilizes best practice research.
Ensures compliance with established hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality controls and regulatory standards and requirements. Oversees completion of unit specific administrative tasks.
Knowledgeable of organizational policies with respect to work rules and discipline and is responsible for providing progressive discipline to employee when indicated.
Proactively addresses potential customer service issues.
Monitors staff performance/competency and provides feedback in timely manner.
Participates in the successful operations of the department and assists with developing and meeting the goals of the department. Assesses both inpatients and outpatients and/or family significant others referred for diabetes education; reviews their medical history, evaluates their individual learning needs and helps develop an education plan to meet their needs. Responds to inpatient teaching requests within 24 to 48 hrs.; recommends outpatient education when appropriate. Provides education to patients and/or families by teaching information regarding their diagnosis and the self-management needed to prevent complications. Provides individual and group counseling and education regarding diabetes self-management to outpatients enrolled in the Diabetes Education Program. Reviews and recommends current educational materials, audiovisuals and a variety of products based on patient needs. Participates in review and development of diabetes programs and lesson plans. Actively participates and promotes diabetes protocols as approved by the Diabetes Advisory Board.
Maintains effective written and verbal communication. Completes all required documentation in an appropriate and timely manner. Documents in patients’ charts providing complete medical information and education received as required by JCAHO and ADA Recognition. Communicates well with other healthcare team members through patient conferences, e-mail and staff meetings and with other Diabetes Education Program Staff to help coordinate and successfully meet ADA recognition requirements. Actively participates in hospital committees as a department representative.
Participates in the successful and safe operations of the unit and observes rules of conduct. Actively practices principles learned including but not limited to: Universal Precautions, fire and disaster, safety, MSDS, PI, etc. Consistently uses proper safety equipment and follows rules of conduct safety.
Maintains a commitment to education and personal growth and seeks educational opportunities to increase clinical competency, including age-specific care, sufficient to meet requirements for certification.
Successfully completes mentoring class. Assists with mentoring of Registered Nurses when other mentor resources have been assigned. May mentor more as desired.
